By 93/94 games like Turrican were out of fashion, even in fancy AGA version. Probably Amiga Power would have rated it 36% because "it doesn't add much to your original Turrican 2 and recquires fast ram and a 2 button pad". (I'm not Amiga Power, this version is a gem, many thanks for it !) |

Halo has similar themes as Turrican. Dread/Grind has a better wow factor for stock A1200. Grind + Turrican themes could be merged. Turrican 2 AGA would be okay in 1992. Last edited by hammer; 16 April 2024 at 09:43. |

Jazz Jackrabbit was pretty successful on PC in 1994. Doom didn't 'instakill' 2D gaming.

Command & Conquer was still going strong in 2D all the way up to 1999.
Quake was the one that really put 2D gaming on ice for a while. |

True. Even if you just look at 'action' games Crusader No Remorse was a big hit in 1995 and Diablo was an even bigger one in 1997.

And yet Abuse was heralded as something special on the PC in 1996! I'd have bought a 1995 release of Turrican 2 AGA on the CD32 along with Speedball 2 CD32.

"Abuse, an MS-DOS scrolling platform shooter which sold over 80,000 copies worldwide." A tiny fraction of Doom/Doom 2's 4 million sales.

[ Show youtube player ] It's similar to SNES Mode 7+DSP-1 co-processor enabled Super Mario Kart, but with Jazz Jackrabbit's theme. --------- Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (1998) was a commercial failure for Gathering of Developers with just 29,000 units sold. Last edited by hammer; 17 April 2024 at 06:12. |

I think he was refering to 2d shooters like Turrican, Contra etc. But even then, I don't agree either. DOOM did not kill anything, it just made a then-new genre popular. |

Yes but the question was had this version of Turrican 2 been released around A1200 times would it had an "impact".
I would say no, because there was actually some Amiga OCS successful hits converted to AGA and none was very impactful sadly. People were expecting some technological advance for the A1200 games. Something that was a clear step above OCS gaming library. Just check the reviews of these AGA enhanced versions. Most of them were reviewed as just revamped version of OCS titles. For instance, Exile AGA is vastly enhanced in comparison of the OCS version, yet it was even mentionned in some reviews to buy the cheaper budget OCS version (or stay with it if you already have a copy). That doesn't alter its quality of course. Just another What If ? hypothesis. |

@Admin this thread has somewhat forked. Any chance you can separate posts not directly about Muzza's amazing Turrican 2 AGA port into a separate thread?

I would not call command and conquer or red alert 2D. They used voxels and sprites mixed. Later versions have 3D units

Turrican 2 AGA's PC VGA 256 color artwork would need Fast RAM, hence Commodore UK MD's argument for uprated hardware specs is the correct pathway. |
