Right JudasEZT, the arrow in the menu even seems to move the same speed as in Shadow of the Beast II Oh and of course arrows are very common in menus Mrs Beanbag, I just wanted to point it out as it is another similarity between the two screens (they could have gone for highlighting or putting brackets around the options or underlining the selected parts, all very common methods)

I still think it may only be coincidence. Yet, I found even more fun similarities! Mh, I will try to list all of them, let's see:

- both title screens fade the logo in from a flashing white to the original logo colours (Axelay does so in an even more advanced way by flashing the outlines of the letters first while only showing a silhouette, then the logo gets illuminated in bright white and fades in just like the Awesome one).

- both games are mixes of genres (Awesome more than Axelay which is just changing perspectives, gameplay, scrolling but does not include trading for example).

- they also both share very similar styled title screens: the choice of colours in particular is interesting as both display a yellow/orange coloured logo in the center with magenta/red stars scrolling vertically in the back. Both scrolling backgrounds are static and not animated or layered (parralax, animations, rotation) etc.).

- the layout of the screen elements is similar: logo is top and centered, scrolling stars in the back, both use the same - of course very common - method to highlight options, both show their options right after the logo is displayed, no "press start" even on the SNES).

All these methods to display logos and lay out title screens are fairly standard of course, I just wanted to point out similarities between the two games. Furthermore that's where the similarities end of course Oh and I must say that I like both games very much, maybe another thing they have in common (to me)...

Are you suggesting a thread merge, TCD? I don't mind either way.

Oh, I didn't know! Of course, just merge it! I would have done so if I knew of the other thread I guess there isn't much more you could add to what already has been said about the two games I mentioned here, anyway

Hehe, I didn't mean it in a bad way, but I just had that Deja Vu feeling about this thread and as Judas himself posted in dex's thread... anyway, I think it's kinda similar, but it might be just coincidence about Awesome and Axelay. Would be interesting to find more games with that style of title screen... guess s2325 will be on it soon

Both might have been 'inspired' by the Galaga title screen. It has all the elements too... actually I really think it's more about a 'common ancestor' rather than a direct relationship between Awesome and Axelay.

I just read about a SNES game call SmartBall (Jerry Boy in Japanese, Jerry as in Jelly).

Not played it yet, but watching a video you can see some similarities with Putty (and a bit of Globdule I guess):
[ Show youtube player ]

From the Wikipedia entry
Quote:
In that incarnation, the player plays as a little jelly bean with eyes, travelling across a photorealistic grassy landscape. The game has graphics and terrain that are characterized as cartoony and cute, which attracts younger players.

The player is able to defend Jerry or attack enemies by controlling certain physical characteristics of Jerry, such as flattening or stretching his body in order to hit enemies, or by finding objects, such as balls, to throw the enemies. The player can also run by pressing the Y button on the controller. Jerry has the ability to stick to walls and ceilings by holding down the Y button as you jump towards them, adding an advantage over Jerry's enemies.
