ok have you got a mutimeter, and test the +5 volt line at the floppy connector and tell us what the voltage is.
if you dont know its the red and black wires(sounds silly to some but there you go) |

I'm afraid I don't have a multimeter (never done much electronics). Sorry. If there were a list of voltages I could check I might be able to get a friend to help me with this. Starting to think it might be better to get another 1200 but does seem strange when all was working days ago...

no probs,if you can ask your freind to check if the voltages are as follows:- +5 volt line no lower than 4.85 volts +12 volt line no lower 11.5 volts im sorry i cant help you no more than this, without it being here this is as far as i can go.good luck p.s if you get another 1200 keep this one for spares, these are getting rarer as you know. |

funny you saying that,i wasent thinking about the psu.a drop on the 5 volt line can indicate a short or bad capacitor.
especialy if the 5 volt line drops to below 4.65 volts. you can test this out by testing the supply at the plug that goes into the 1200 on its own then testing from the floppy connector when its on.and compare voltages. |

Aahhh ok. So if we have current issues it might be worth changing the caps...

it might be,i asked all those questions to eliminate other problems.
but like you say youve checked the caps visually and traied the psu on another amiga. i asked about trying it on compidite to see if the rgb was gone(this is unlikely but i have seen this) at one point i thought the cia chip was gone but it would still boot witout it. but im starting to thing the lisa chip is shot. |

It is weird. It's the bizarre shorting floppy which gets me. It's like there's some bonkers electrical short somewhere. I'm going to buy another one I think.

Ok I found the issue. There is a slightly bulging cap. I cleaned some leakage from just to the right of it and it now shows kickstart screen. So I'll get all the caps changed. Is it easy to do oneself or should I just pay amigakit?
It's the rightmost cap just above expansion port. |

I changed all of them, but I woudn't make it again. Better send it to Amigakit.

Yeah I might do that. Seem to have lost the floppy drive as collateral. Hopefully with the caps change it will return...I suppose I don't really need it...

Yeah shorts. Flickering floppy light was a symptom. Looked very like shorting.

Sound is fine. A couple of missed sample plays / wrong sample plays in music on epic but this might have been the game. Sound quality is good, no crackling. I cannot revive the floppy controller ( tried 2 drives ) so might that be affected? Anyway it'll be coming your way in the new year to have its caps done. Hopefully the floppy will then work but if not I don't suppose it matters.

Check capacitor leak has not corroded Paula pins. Cap/Battery leaks have a habit of travelling down tracks.
