Good idea, and actually I would trade a larger size for larger file size, if bandwidth could be an issue. Animated gifs, well. They're fun for the guys who use them. I have a dancing alien from Elite as avatar on amibay - I chose it for the fun factor, but ofc it helps me find my own posts also.

I've already got a 100x100 avatar of Optimus playing the CD32 so I'm set for the change, if it happens.

You exaggerates - it's nothing like twice more, just a little more.
Once I read your decision though, I'm happy to let it go. Guess I should get a smaller resolution monitor. But you know us lot, we like to have a moan and whinge now and again. |

Well, that's very true - allowing 192px width and keeping the filesize would make bigger avatars possible without changing anything else!
Ofc, if the height could be increased to 80 or so it would allow big-ish avatars without needing much more scrolling, especially if you halve the margins around the pics. |

128x128? what a waste of bandwidth and screen space but since I can always choose not to show avatars, no big deal

Personally, I say no to bigger avatars. I think they're OK as they are and I agree that I don't want the extra loading or scrolling time.
I'm also pretty glad that there's not (or at least mainly not) animated avatars either - they're distracting and annoying in my opinion. |

I'd like a 3D avatar that cost $200,000,000.

Well, many years ago, when I was just a yung'un, we sampled larger avatars at the EAB for a brief trial period.
It wasn't very successful. Even a small increase to avatar size, bumping them up to 96 x 96, just didn't look all that great, as if they were stretching posts and the forum along with it. I agree that the 64 x 64 rule makes creating avatars somewhat difficult, as the size limitations can be very restrictive. So, if fellow EABers (and RCK) wanted to trial larger avatars again, I'd say why not. But it probably won't work out. But I'm adamantly against animated avatars, because they look cheap and tacky. |

Hmmm. If you make your own with style I don't see them as being tacky.
But I'm with you and RCK, animated avatars can be too distracting. Here's one I made some time ago. Decent enough |

My apologies DH - you know I admire your work, and that includes your animated stuff.
I guess I'm just used to seeing lots of tacky examples of animated avatars from some of the other boards I frequent, ones that are mostly populated by much younger patrons who are very gif happy. |

I guess I'm with you, I've seen animated avatars that really suck, ones that have had no real thought put to them, it's these ones that I guess are the real problem, shocking and tacky that have 100% distraction rate |

I like larger avatars too. I don't agree with the scrolling being a problem, and it would only make very small posts slightly longer. 128x128px make for a good avatar imho (this is the setting (or near abouts) we use on the exotica forum, although hardly anyone posts there anyway ;-) )

OK, here is the deal
If I update the avatar size to 96x96, I would have to remove the "Join Date" and "Location" information. note: I don't like the "information to the right" option, on the right there should be the post, that's all |
