I am really starting to hate some of the dishonest people on ebay... they p*ss me off!
I received the expansion board and it is in a very bad state! the seller said there were no signs of battery leakage...... it has corrosion everywhere around the battery!! The traces have been eaten away and the jumper pins are green! I don't think this will ever work The seller is either blind or a liar |

I had a very similar looking board to that but from Power computing. Needless to say it also suffered the same fate with battery corrosion. The Gary socket piggy back module was obliterated and I ended up chucking it away...
You could always try removing the battery and soaking it in a mix of baking soda/water... that brings off battery acid very nicely... |

Carefully removing the corrosion and with some luck you can see the eaten traces and remake them with soldered wires.

Rechargeable batteries are alkaline not acid. You need a weak acid to neutralise, not a base like baking soda.
Take some photos of it. If it is not obviously 100% dead you can send it me and I'll repair it. |

Ok here are a few pics of the damaged area... i have left the battery attached for now just incase it is unrepairable and i may be able to get a refund as the seller said "there are no signs of battery leakage"
Notice the large trace in the top-right corner is completely destroyed and green!! there is also a trace under the battery that is green and crispy too! Last edited by PowerPie5000; 18 November 2009 at 13:24. |

Doesn't look too bad mate, easily repairable if you have the know how. i cant make out whether the copper etch is gone or whether it's corroded, i suspect it's the latter and easily cleanable/fixable.

The Gary adapter will not seat correctly due to some moron breaking one of the legs/pins and then repairing it with a big blob of solder so now it does not slot properly into the socket
@dire_wolf It actually looks worse than it does in the pictures! I am handy with a soldering iron but i have never repaired traces before! I suppose i could do what rkauer mentioned and just join the corroded gaps in the traces with a bit of wire and solder? The large trace in the top right corner with the "+" sign on it looks quite bad.... all green and crispy!! I think the copper has actually rotted away in that corner |

I've had to do that a couple of times on PC motherboards etc. It's just a case of using something like a small craft knife to scrape at the very top layer of the copper, to reveal the trace and give you a footing for the solder, then bridge it with a suitable gauge of wire. Don't forget to give it a good clean up first though.
:EDIT: Thinking about it why bother? A500 expansion boards aren't uncommon or expensive so chuck this thing back at the seller and tell them to list things properly in the future, how else will they learn? Get a refund then get something thats been looked after lol |

Doesn't look too bad.
Snip that battery off as soon as possible and neutralise the alkali using a weak acid like lemon juice. Give it a good clean with an old tooth brush but not too hard. Lets see some underside photos. That battery looks like it has been replaced and is not the one that leaked? As with all "Free" fixes, if you want to send it to me you must send it registered delivery and include the right amount of postage stamps for it to be returned. No stamps, no return. Simple as that. PM me for the postal address. I do not have an Amiga 500 that I can use to test it (only got an A500+) the fixes will be continuity only. Last edited by alexh; 31 July 2009 at 22:13. |

Once you've remove the battery and cleaned it up... it would be worth trying if there are no broken traces.... Shame I no-longer live in Preston or you could have popped it over |

Ok here are some pics of the underside... it's not too bad at all, just a bit of corrosion around the battery solder spots and a small corroded trace under the "9211" numbers.

I am now going to de-solder the battery and give it a quick clean with an old soft toothbrush and a squirt of lemon... Just as alexh suggested
EDIT: i have just been offered a refund from the seller.... or an exchange for other miggy stuff so i will put the repair on hold for the moment in case he needs the board back! Last edited by PowerPie5000; 31 July 2009 at 23:10. |
