Greetings,
The bad sector thing has been ongoing, it had some bad sectors at the very end of the drive, but now it has even more bad sectors, so I would suspect it has actually done a head crash and it's the slow domino effect. I'll pull it apart later, I need to destroy the disk anyway and confirm my suspicions. Just copied all files to another 1 Gb disk I had lying around, works perfectly.

Old dead disk = Seagate Hawk

Two working and longest working drives = Quantum Fireballs

Those old quantum scsi disks were certainly built to last

Indeed they were, luckily I have 3 here.

I am not in a position to offer anything for any sort of accelerator, I am not working and virtually living off credit, a dangerous exercise at the best of times. I was more just wondering what is available.

But a thankyou to DoogUK for the info.
