Yeah man! Atari 2600 to Amiga to PSX to PS2 for me, with a line of PCs running in parallel with that of course

I'm still a geek though, when I get a new toy I still look up the specs.

Hmm I remember the first memories for me are on a ZX Spectrum, though to be honest I am not that old so I was 4 years old when the ZX came out, I can`t remember playing on anything earlier that that ... hehe I was a late starter. Then moved onto the Sinclair QL, then Amiga, Mega Drive/Super Famicom then onto the Saturn ... never had a PS1 ... not that many gaming machines to be honest. Still makes me feel young seeing some of the other game machines people played on when they were young.

Ha, I started with a Pong clone in '77, followed with Atari 2600 - which still is probably in working order, and tens of cartridges. ET rulez....

@ mrbob2

nice write up..i think most 35+ years or older users here feel the same way

btw, if the 1st game you played wasnt two vertical sticks moving up and down and hitting another stick moving horizontally on a screen then you're not a 1st gen gamer

This gen leaves little to the imagination and that's really the biggest problem- at least for me.It doesn't stop me playing lots of modern stand out games but i ignore the majority of them.Games weren't better back in the older era - in fact they were mostly worse - but they were far more convincing if you look back to how you felt in them

Apart from the odd few, games tend to feel like games these days despite their better than anything graphics. The next big advance in the form of newer consoles will only bring problems like why everything is at odds with the visual splendour

The magic is gone

You had to be a gamer to play older games.
Any fool can play Wii.

Allthough I enjoy the latest generation of games, it's very hard to get that same feeling I got when I first played pong back in the 70's....

The game & watch series (and all derivatives that followed) were pretty good too. I owned dozens of those LCD games. The sheer joy of owning and playing those portable games!

1st generation of gaming for me came in around the mid 1970s when the pong tv games were made before this you had to make do with the pocketeers type games but when space invaders came out in 1977 in the arcades that was the kickstart needed to get the masses interested i remember waiting in the queue for hours to try to get to play the game in the leisure centre in rotherham and when the likes of galaxian missile command pacman etc came out later on the future of gaming was here to stay forever.

My gaming history is less exciting... I started on a Game & Watch (you controlled this cowboy or whatever he was, and you had to protect this wooden fort from hordes of enemies trying to set it on fire... if I recall correctly).

Then I got the C64 a bit later, then Amiga 500 and then eventually a PC.

Funny thing is, he says UK version was called "puckman".
Mine definately was called "Pac-Man".

We all used to play Champion Racer at School - it was great fun - Tandy (Radioshack) typically did their own version of this with cycles!

My first game was called BMX flyer, it was great and I still remember the little tune it used to play lol! Like the OP I've been a gamer since my Atari 2600 at a very young age, moving onto the Speccy, then the 8bit consoles etc...

I only got my first Amiga when I was about 19 or 20 from a Car Boot sale, didn't have the money back in the day.
