It's down to the orthogonal nature of Death Mask: In other words, constant movement between right angles, always rotating 90 degrees, and it's tough to convey transition between these angles that doesn't use a lot of system resources in an under-powered video game, so the game does that flip animation that does disorientate.

Yes, the walls and corridors in Wolfenstein 3D are also orthogonal, but since you can face in any angle, you almost never have disorientation issues.

Probably if they had drastically sped up the turning like in Legend of Grimrock it would have been far less noticeable. But then we're probably running into hardware limitations again.

You can strafe in CD32 version. I have a custom mapping set-up in WinUAE and it rocks. The game is playable and fun, hardly a "shit" game IMO, but not DOOM of course.

"Shit game time"

YOU TAKE THAT BACK. Death Mask was bloody wonderful fun. It got just as much if not more play time than AB3D, Gloom, Fears and Breathless.

An Amiga friend of mine told me about Death Mask and how it was exactly like Doom and ran on an unexpanded Amiga. It was too good to believe. I wanted to believe it and told another guy I knew who was just about to abandon the Amiga for a PC but was still in the saving period that there was no reason to get a PC because, after all, the Amiga could do it. That was before I actually got a copy (ahem) of Death Mask. I was so embarrassed. My Amiga could certainly do better than that because I had a 50 MHz 1230. I had already played Alien Breed 3D (which I enjoyed despite the super blocky graphics) and there were Doom-type engine demos that actually targetted 030+ hardware and ran pretty well.

Looking at the program now I must admit that it is a fairly polished Amiga game. Death Mask would have been great if the engine had been used for Eye of the Beholder type games where it doesn't matter that you can't shoot at non-orthogonally aligned angles because you don't shoot at all. The Doom hype is what really made a technically solid graphics engine for a modest unexpanded Amiga such a crap. And it was something like six years late.

must give that a go. Never played the CD32 version. If it had some good music as well it would improve the game. Like the intro music is pretty cool for example, similar stuff throughout would have been great.

Pardon my complete and utter ignorance here, I'm very new to the FTP site, but I couldn't find this. I don't even know if I know what it is either. So use this txt file to enhance the game? A WHD load version?

The text file is literally what you quoted there yourself. An overview of the controls and the key bindings.

So just telling us what the controls are? Am I being completely mental here, so it's the controls that surely are already self explanatory? Or is it some kind of new functionality that I'm unaware off? The post certainly reads that way like there is an improvement to playability. I only played it on a A500 so is there more control on ECS/AGA version?

Doesn't look really self-explanatory to me besides the usual movement controls. But yeah, it's a bit much to present it as if it is some kind of crack.

I dunno worked out the controls of the game without ever having a manual so that is what I mean by self explanatory.

But yes I though the txt file above was some kind of like enhancement May be that's just me over thinking it.

OK. Watching Zeus play through, he complained about bringing up the MAP by waggling the joystick (stupidly done by game developers!).

The original docs of Death Mask states that wagging the joystick will bring up the map. Nothing else is mentioned about the map. Zeus commented they should of assigned a key to bring up the map - the M key.

The other thing was no strafing in the game.

You can move (strafe) diagonally. This is in the original docs and does work to some degree in the game.

I played the game with both IPF and cracked versions and found 12 different keyboard keys that bring up the map! Saves wrecking ones joystick!

Looking in the EAB server I found a "Death mask keys" txt file. It was incomplete so I added and updated the file to what I found while playing the game.
Maybe a replay by Zeus?
