I just got an A600, and it has an A601. The jumpers are set to 1MB, but it only reports 512kb.
I have taken it apart and there appears to be only 1 memory ic inside. So maybe this is 1 of those 512kb 1's. EDIT:- Been doing some more research. Mine is definately completely different to this 1 listed here. The board is laid out different and it only has 1 Mem IC. It also has no battery backed up clock. Its lituraly a board, a few caps / resistors and 1 ic. Its marked as an official Commodore 1, very odd. Last edited by FOL; 06 September 2008 at 18:13. |

Piccies
Right, i managed to get it open, seems in my hurry to get home friday, i forgot to solder the earth tags, that keep it closed, .
So heres the pics. Apparently is the REV1.1, the board is a completly different layout to the REV 2A. Theres also space for 3 mem I.C.'s. Im still trying to find info on the ic. EDIT:- Seems that chip is only 256k, Been testing some more and its reporting total RAM as 1.26MB. So this is turning into an odd A601 indeed. As it infact only adds 256k, maybe the extra 2 empty ic spaces are for another 256k and 1, 512k. This would then aleast make it 1MB. Now inside. Last edited by FOL; 07 September 2008 at 02:03. |

AWESOME!!!! !!!!
impressive camera skills okay that is a VERY interesting card.... 3 positions for the 256k*16 bit chips to exist... now... why is that.... you only need two for a full 1MB..... so why have 3.... I wonder now looking closer at this if U17 is the 512KB position and U18 and U19 are the full 1MB position.... arguable you would know if you populate U18 and there's no change available to the available ram... hmmm this really is a fascinating card, these images should go on amiga.resource.cx or amiga-hardware.com thanks very much FOL |

I have an old CD32 in work, I blew up (long story). I see it has the same 512kb Chips, the REV 2A has. So could I add them to the empty spaces and see if it works? or is there no point? EDIT:- see what you mean, like a 1.5MB version? |

yes... the RAS of U18 is connected to the RAS of U17
interestingly both UCAS[pin 28] and LCAS[pin 29] are shared for U18 and U19 as one would expect BUT not connected to U17 that i can see... this is very COOL.... i wonder if this could be a SLOW mem expansion... I have to admit I am a little excited... |

@FOL
thank you very much, this is truly a very interesting bit of kit you have here... truly!!! the U17 slot shares RAS with U18, very interesting, however not the UCAS or LCAS (upper / lower column address strobes) the chip in there is as you know a 256k 16bit word chip (512KBytes) clearly this is interesting... although this is really gonna sound cheeky, is there any chance that you could BUZZ out the pin 28 and pin 29 on U17, I would like to know what pin they go to on the expansion port. |

I mean it clearly states on the case, 512KB or 1MB, lol. You want shots of all round the Chip? so you can see contacts on both sides. |

@FOL
indeed, I have not seen this like of hardware anywhere, that's not to say its unique, just... very obscure... yes please, as many pictures as you hoster can provide, it most certainly will give me something to ponder |

Right, had a chance to go over it with a multimeter.
Pin 28 (UCAS) is connected to Pin 1 of the edge connecter via a 1K Ohm Resistor (R908). Pin 29 (LCAS) is connected to Pin 8 of the edge connecter direct (0 Ohm). Another thing I noticed, is that Pin 14 of the IC has the track broken (in between the pads for R901), proberly during production, maybe a design mistake corrected in production? Hence it has the green wire, which is connecting to pad 14 of U18 (missing IC). I will check out that busted CD32, confirm it has the correct IC's, if so after you finish what is needed, ill add 1 512k to U18 and see what happens as you sugguested. Anyways, hope this helps zetr0, I also added more hardware pr0n for you, follow that link I gave you in PM. its under folder NEW. EDIT:- Heres the showconfig, with it in and out. This pic shows it without the A601 Rev1.1 board out. This pic shows it with the A601 Rev1.1 board in. Last edited by FOL; 07 September 2008 at 21:33. |
