I might just take you up on that!

Thanks for the positive comments.

This is 16 colours:

This looks really nice. I wonder if you could add an option to “lift” the black colour to be a dark version of the overlay? I really remember this about my local space invaders was the obvious multi layers of transparent acetate; the invaders shifting from colour to another.

Not sure what you mean? Do you want more overlay colours (I do have a map of a multicoloured overlay which I could implement)?

I think it would be better to add this in some form:

Damned if I can find this backdrop though...

From this thread, seems it was in an old version of MAME, but is no longer:

The image I posted is a copy of the ACTUAL SCAN of the backdrop from a Space Invaders cabinet. The actual backdrop is a dark blue; when the light inside the cab shines on it, it will look a different color.

The moon is a separate piece, that sits in front of the backdrop, but still behind the reflected image. See below... (which is a copy from a SCAN of the actual moon)

Play the game in MAME (a current version, not some pre-0.106 version), turn off bezels, and you'll see the image "you're looking for," which is created with two pieces of artwork.

I've tried to re-create from 2 images.

Below is 320 x 240 pixels:
This is just rough. If you like I can try to do better?

You'll need to let me know your screensize though.

...and here's one that's "320x200" pixels:
I can play around with:
  • The opacity of the sky.
  • The opacity of the moon.
  • The sky positioning i.e. higher or lower.
  • The moon positioning i.e. higher or lower.
...and when you're happy, create 8 and 16 colour .IFF files

Examples:
8 colour .IFF:

16 colour .IFF:

To get the transparency effect you could add an extra biplane and then use Bitplanesbitmap for the 1 bitplane the invaders etc would reside on. The top half of the colours could then be brightened versions of the first half. The invaders would look a little transparent then but still only be in 1 bitplane...

You could add extra colour to the background with a few palette swaps down the screen too.

I'm liking that slowly the Amiga is getting all the proper arcade conversions it should have had back in the day.

In 20 years when some youtube who isn't born yet looks back at the Amiga I hope it's all these new versions he uses to show off the hardware.
