well i've just had a shock, someone has uploaded 92gb of amiga files on to a newserver
includes all the devious tools as i downloaded the 5mb list of what is contains. as the 252 are part files, have to download all 92gb, to unpack the multi-spanned archive. stupid i know, i dont have 92 gb of space to download it, and then another whatever space is required to extract. if u estimate 50% compression, you could be looking at 184gb worth of files. small note: the person who uploaded is FRENCH. apps, games, music disks, demo disks, LSD tools disks i think all of the TOSEC is in it. if u have the space to download and speed and have a newserver u can download its in the alt.binaries.emulators.amiga. I know i dont have the space. currently running low at 1.79gb from 400gb filled with music and movies, and programs i have downloaded and burning on a regular basis. |

Hi andy2004,
Wow! What a find! Some thoughts... Whilst it would be a shame to let the greater part of this uploaded 92GB archive go to waste, it may not actually be necessary to download the whole archive in order to extract the remaining Devious Tools. If the archive is in rar or 7zip format (most likely), then, unfortunately, this will not be an option. However, if it is in zip or gzip format, I know of a tool which will extract the contents of broken archives (including part archives), by searching for valid compressed data and extracting it. Inspection of the archive will show what files are contained therein by looking for header information. By my reckoning, a 92GB archive in 252 parts gives an average size of around 374MB per part. Downloading one part of this archive would therefore be justified if it gave a reasonable chance of locating these tools inside the archive. And any part of the archive could potentially contain very useful files. If the list of what it the archive contains reflects the order in which the files were archived, it may be possible to guess with some accuracy which of the 252 parts contain(s) the required files. Like hit (above), I don't have access to a binary usenet server (in fact, I don't know anything about news-servers!), but there will be other users who have (and do!). Perhaps you could upload the list of what the archive contains to the Zone, and confirm the archiving method and whether the parts are of equal size or not, so that we might begin to form a plan... Is there anyone else with me on this? If not: as I said, just some thoughts... Last edited by prowler; 25 November 2008 at 23:45. |

It might not be necessary to download or extract the whole archive just to get a few files... See my post above for more info. Last edited by prowler; 27 November 2008 at 23:30. Reason: Deleted link. |

uploaded the .nfo file to the ftp, to make it smaller as its 5mb i 7-zipped it
doh, The zone allows zip rar and lzh. well thalion i see in the archive list theres a crunchmania disk by the creator i was wondering whether that was a cracked / full version. the DMC disks i believe would be the old 2.5 version. and i uploaded the 3.0gold of that. i' havent properly gone through the list of files yet, i did some lsd hacking tools, no idea whats on them though, look interesting. trying to free up my drive space and hope mu isp doesnt delete the 92gb of files. but no worries. managed to claw back 10gb today. And thanks again for uploading the Devious tools, 1-119, and into my upload folder of all accounts, i was looking for your name. |

ok i'm downloading the first part1.rar from that 92gb just to have a look, and see how much data it may contain. there are a total of 252 files each around 396mb. if i can extract most of the data, i'll put it on a cdr as a backup, being told by my news server downloader its going to take 30min at the current speed i can get, which means when my speed gets halfed each file would take 1hr aprrox, lol, dare i do the math on that, 10.5days approx,
ok first file downloaded and it contains nothing but games typical i'm interested in the apps not games Last edited by andy2004; 27 November 2008 at 17:36. |

I didnt say i was downloading all 92 gb of the 252 files. as i still dont have anywhere need 92gb free and also i believe my isp doesnt keep the files longer than 1 week on their server.
their news server is a free service as i subscribe to their broadband, not many people use it. but i will download as much as i can before its removed, non of my partitions are larger than 92gb either my drive space is made up of 1x80gb 1x27gb and 1x300gb, the 300gb is partitioned into 5 partitions, Last edited by andy2004; 28 November 2008 at 13:15. |

We're grateful that your ISP has presented you with this wonderful opportunity, but disappointed that we can't be of any help at this stage. No-one here's expecting you to download the whole archive (That would surely be a miracle!), but anything you can achieve will be appreciated by everyone on this forum, I'm sure. None of your effort will be wasted. Please let us know how it is going. BTW, in case the parts of this archive you are able to download turn out not to be contiguous (for example, because the links to one or more parts are broken or some parts are truncated or corrupted) it would be of great advantage in attempting to extract the data from these files to know the exact filesize of each part (if you can get this information). |

Ok time to say something. Fortunately i have access to usenet and my Server keeps the data a bit longer. Unfortunately the download i quite slow so it will take a lot of time to download that stuff.
But till now i have downloaded about 24GB so lets see how long it takes to get the rest. |

well your connection is faster than mine thalion, i'm on file 7, as i speak
which works out about 2.24gb, current speed 116Kbps as i said my isp halfs my download speeds during the day and night, so i may get back my 249Kbps from 1am.5 of those files today. may i ask which newserver client u are using. to answer prowler, well the archive is non-solid, so i can extract most of the zip, adf, lha, files, i would be the one that would require the next archive. aka if i downloaded 1-10 all files could be extracted - 1, the 1 that would be the first on 11 Last edited by andy2004; 29 November 2008 at 13:47. |

A huge thanks to both of you for your efforts! Quote:

winrar can extract non corrupt files from an archive. the first file of part13 may be corrupt due to the file being split between 12 and 13, but then the rest of the files would be undamaged except maybe the last file in the archive which would probably also be a bit in file 14. edited my previous post i put solid instead of non-solid.
Solid rar archive requires all the files to be able to extract 1 nonsolid u can extract any file within the archive. winrar would look for the fileheader for the non corrupt file which it could extract |
