One pattern I noticed in their naming conventions was that the desktop/tower amiga's where all > 1000 (IE A2000, A3000, A3000T, A3500 - which was an existing prototype, A4000 and A4000T all where high end models with zorro slots etc).

Save for the A1200, all the low end amiga's where < 1000 (A500, A500 plus, A600). The a1200 should have been called the A800 or A4000 Mini.

One thing that the A1200 and A600 should have had was native VGA output like the A3000. It would not have cost a great deal more to include this, I think most users would have been willing to pay a little extra to be able to use industry standard VGA monitors. Commodore's proprietary RGB format should have been discontinued when the C128 was discontinued.

I mean seriously if they called it the A3500 or better still

what you think of the name "A-w350m3" its got a ring to it.

If you want to play the old stuff then stick to a 500 or 2000 as 95% of games are for the OCS chip.

The 4000 isn't all that great - it's a shame they never used the aga version of the a3000 board that Dave Haynie talks about in some online articles as that sounded far superior. Instead they chose a different designed board which was 'cheaper' apparently.... not saying it's a crap machine it's not - but it could've been a lot lot better.

The 1200/600 aren't as well made as the earlier stuff imo - make of that what you will. If you want to play aga stuff just buy a cd32 and wang a keyboard on the side or an sx32 if you want to goto town.... this is presuming you want to play original games or whload.

I cannot disagree more. An A1200 is 10x a better option than getting a CD32.

The CD32 is a pain in the arse to do anything other than play CD32 games on.

A1200 has extremely easy options to upgrade and offers the easiest solution to someone wishing to play all those WHDLoad games. If you are going to miss 6 inches off your desk then go for the A600

If the 1200 is going to be easier on whdload then fair do's grab a 1200... I guess it will be cheaper in the long run thinking about it... I only ever remember when I owned a 1200 cursing the darn thing as trying to get older software to run was a complete nightmare and it wasn't as stable as my old trusty 500 was.... Maybe I had a duffen, who knows...

Although saying that if you only want to play AGA stuff then the 32 versions are usually better and have more content than the standard 1200 versions ever did...

Tis a shame no one does an ide option for the a500 these days

I guess to solve the incompatibility problems have a standard OCS machine and have a bling bling aga machine with fancy workbench...

Well Paul_s, the voice from below will speak.....

A1200 is the best solution. All those problems you used to have is gone thx to WHDload, this is so easy to use and play old games on a 1200 (as long as the game got an whdloadpatch, but many do have, and more comes)

The cd32 is, as kg say, p.i.t.a

You can buy the 1200 fairly cheap, and then you can mount some pc hardware (HD ,CDdrev etc) and you got a good machine. But you can still expand it....

What do people do about whdload requiring 'original' games though? A lot of the older stuff I used to play is not so easy to come across as originals go

Well as soon as I sort out download problems with my website you can download the whdload games, pre-installed from it. Just unzip and run.

Thanks for all of your bowing sire

I won't be fixing the site tonight as I'm heading in to London straight from work and will likely be drunk when I return.

Might get a chance tomorrow night but it's likely I won't be around much. I should get a day on saturday or sunday to get this problem solved. I was all ready to unleash the site but then after some testing it all went pear shaped.

Thanks everybody. At the very least, I want to setup WinUAE so that I can install all my old games to an emulated HDD and play them with WHDLoad. However, I gotta relearn how to set it up because the last time I set it up completely was 2 years ago and I forget all the steps. But Cody made a wiki on how to install it, if I'm not mistaken. Anybody got the link to it?

I'd recommend getting ClassicWB (http://classicwb.abime.net) setup on your amiga.

Then it's simply a matter of downloading whdload_usr.lha (http://www.whdload.de) and installing that. (the above setup has all the tools to unpack and install it)

Then download some games, unpack to your games dir then GAME-A-ROO!

worth registering it too! first for the whd team devotion, second to get rid of some restrictions on some games with unregistered version!!!

@zetro
My spell checker mustn't be working, keeps comming up awesome, cant get the 3 to work

What advantages do I get from installing Kickstart 3.1 over 3.0
With my A1200/3.1 + 030EC +8mb accel card I cant get wb3.9 to work So I just run wb 3.1.
My second A1200 - destined for a tower conversion still has KS3.0
MY A2000 and CDTV both Have KS3.1 I'm just wondering what Ive gained

for a games m/c
I would fit a cf boot drive - you know it makes sense
laptop CD/DVD rom
030 accel (try and avoid an EC - doh) + some fast mem
this sounds very familiar

Have you ever bought a 1200 from amigakit.com? I'm curious to see what those are like, I almost bought one from them a while ago.
