alloc40 handles either 0MB, 4MB or 16MB in each bank. I assume 4MB would be mirrored four times over the 16MB bank. It first tests to see whether there is RAM in each MB, if there is then it determines the amount of RAM in each bank. It then adds the appropriate range in one chunk.

E.g. if you had 4MB in the $02000000-$02FFFFFF bank and 16MB in the other bank, alloc40 would add 20MB from $02C00000-$03FFFFFF.

I can't see anything that would directly cause a crash if e.g. one SIMM were faulty.

mark8564: Can you post a pic of the top edge of the board, showing the other side of the SIMM slots (not the end near MADE IN BRITAIN)?

is this ok

Given that merely accessing areas where the RAM should be is causing a lockup, I'm thinking the bus cycles aren't being terminated properly - would you agree?

I have ADF's of both disks. That came with the A5000. It's release version 4.0 so it might work with the B5000

Ok that would be great, could you upload the ADF'S, no harm in trying them, but am thinking the card is faulty.

Try running the memory test program that's in the System folder/drawer. On my system, memory test will crash if you try to run it after you've already run alloc. You need to boot into workbench then run the memory test before you try to alloc the extra ram. If you boot off the installation floppy, it's already run alloc, so when you run memory test and it crashes your system, you think you have a bad card. (I still remember the phone call I made to SSL when I first got the card!)

on the custom disk, ignore the "+2 MB" that shows on the Alloc icon when you click it, the icon is wrong. on my system it still adds all 4 banks... I guess I could edit the icon...

oh, thought I should add, the banks can be populated in any order on my card. So you could just populate bank 1 or 4. However, when I had a bad chip in one of my banks, the whole bank doesn't show up. So you might have a bad SIMM. At one point I had bank 1, bank 2, bank 4 because of a single failed chip in bank 3.

Thanks, I was hoping there would be some clear indication of which SIMMs correspond to which bank, but there isn't.

It sounds like there's a hardware fault in that case. I wonder if that's related to one SIMM slot being bad?

The A5000 is different to the B5000-40 so the A5000 software won't be much use for it. The A5000 has its memory at a different address. (But it's good you uploaded it, for anyone else who has an A5000 and maybe future emulation...)

Correction: It looks like the Alloc program on the A5000 ADF does support the B5000-40!
