The CD32 FMV cartridge will play the earlier "CD-I Digital Video" discs (the non-standard Philips ones) as well as the later generic (standard compliant) Video CDs.

Modern DVD players and PCs will only play the later Video CDs, and some won't even play those despite claiming to be able to do so.

@mk1: If you're going to buy a CD32 FMV cartridge at some point, make sure it's got the latest v40.30 ROM. Commodore updated it to improve compatibility.

Hmm, alright. Does the rom version read somewhere on the unit or how does one find out which version it is?

They usually have a "40.30 ROM" sticker on the metal case/shield, although mine didn't. I won it on eBay and was very pleased when it turned out to be the latest version. You can also tell by looking at the ROM chip itself, although this involves sliding the circuit board out of the metal shielding. It's not difficult to do, though.
