I bought a 3com 3c589 Etherlink with dongle for 99p off ebay and I tried out rare_j's excellent guide (thanks!) and it worked first time!

I've got a netgear FA411 connected to my A600 and am running amiTCP. I can ping amiga and internet and PC but as soon as i use AExplorer or FlashFXP / LeechFTP i get socket errors on both machines. Have added that ftp line as stated above. Any suggestions?

I've got a 3c589 Etherlink III card here. I will rip out the netgear and load the 3com drivers and see how it goes. I hate the dongle on the 3com thats why i tried the netgear. I think i have 15 3CCFE574 10/100 network cards here all with broken dongles ...LOL

Hello! Nice to meet you and sorry for my bad "italianglish". I'm a new user. I have an Amiga 1200 with 6 GB of HDD and a memory expansion card with 8 MB. I followed this good guide (the post number #4 of this thread), but I have a big problem. If I remove the memory expansion card from the trapdoor expansion slot, AmiTCP works fine (I can ping every PC in my network ecc ecc), but if I switch on my A1200 with the expansion card and write "startnet" from the shell my A1200 says:
![]() I don't know if it is a bug of the driver of my card (3Com EtherLink III 3C589D) or if it is a bug of AmiTCP. I tried, also, a floppy with another copy of amitcp supplied with the card (I bought a kit over ebay), preconfigured, but it does the same problem: with the memory expansion it fails. Any suggestion? Thanks a lot! |

The driver is not the problem but your memory expansion. Those with 8 MB on board are not compatible with the PCMCIA port. If you can switch to 4 MB and it'll work fine.

Mmmm it's a strange thing! I can try to downgrade to 4 MB (i have a lot of SIMM modules avaible in the drwaers of my bedroom!), but I don't understand: softwares like iBrowse need 8 MB of memory, and a lot of people with A1200 are using pcmcia ethernet cards. I think it's strange that there is no workaround for this problem! BTW I will try however the downgrade to 4 MB (and I thank you for this hint)

With simple memory expansions (without an extra CPU) there's simply no room to add 8MB of extra memory without having to overwrite something else (in this case the PCMCIA port). The addressing map of an A1200 leaves room for just 4MB of extra memory. This is not an issue with accelerators (well most of them anyway).

Understood! So the only way for using PCMCIA card and a memory expansion > 4 MB is an accelerator (aaargh! blizzard cards are SOOOO expensive!!). Thanks a lot! Have a nice day
