Threads don't really age on a site which is all about nostalgia. But thank you for bringing it back into the spotlight.

My favorite is the same - championship edition. On a real arcade machine.

Brings me back to the first vacation I ever took to Spain when I was a kid. In the bar on the camping there were two glorious arcade machines; Knights of the Round and Streetfighter 2 : CE. Goodbye spending money on the first day.

I first saw SF2 on the aracade in 1990, I admit I wasn't really pulled towards it, and continued to spend my money on Shinobi mostly.

Then I saw the CE version and I played it to death.
Then came Super SF2, when I saw the increased speed, specials and ken's fire dragon punch, I decided to pass on it.
And continue to pass on all Street fighters since.

CE version is the absolute best version, especially the last Japanese set which was emulated in mame in 2012. (It removes some of the bugs I saw in all versions of CE, like the corner bug).

I still play SF2CE online using Supercade (well last time was too years ago), and I still keep learning every day .

There was some real great players last time I played Not sure what is the situation now.

There is also one element of randomneess that I learned about only when some SF2 tweets.
An example, if you time your dragon punch as soon as you stand up, and also you get at the same time an attack from the air (someone jumping on you), the program will randomly choose either to recive the hit.

It is only then that I got rid of my obsession to perfectly time the dragon punch on standup which I was thinking will be 100% effective if I timed it correctly which was not the case according to the developpers.

I always held the belief that the dragon punch was invulnerable on the way up, and took priority over everything- Sagat's tiger uppercut included. This was in the play guides of the time, not saying it's irrefutable but would be very surprised!
Hyper fighting was my favourite for ages but super turbo was an excellent for 3do. Now I usually play champion edition via PSP.

It is invulnerable once the first anim frame of the dragon punch is triggered, but while standing up you may have a dragon punch programmed to trigger, but it doesn't and you receive a hit instead.

one way to handle this issue and avoid a hit, is to to play the dragon punch and very quickly pull the joystick to your side to guard.

I this case if the dragon punch don't trigger, you will end up guarding. But this is very hard to do, as it need really quick and dexterous play.

So being hit while doing a standing dragon depends on the attacker reaching the attacking frame before the dragon starts. But as you say the guard will always guard against an attacker while you are getting up – as though it's the first thing 'in the chain' that gets checked.
So if the timing of the dragon was so that it began as soon as the invulnerability of getting up had ended wouldn't that still render you invulnerable? Or is it that you are not guaranteed this first frame if you are facing an attacking frame in the same instance – in which case the program decides randomly which is the victor? I would still have thought the dragon to come out on top but if this is from the developers... Whenever I failed to land a standing dragon I always put it down to mistiming it...
I will play again! It sounds like you've been up against some masterful competitors, I never had to be that good in my local area.

I think this might be what is happening.
But there is one thing that is intersting, if you do a dragon punch while you stand up not facing the oponnent then the dragon punch is 100% if you time correctly. (and I have a 100% success rate on it). Which let me think that in this situation, there is one added frame of unvulnerability where the player reorient itself and at the same time throws the dragon punch, thus making it 100%.

It is like if the program is doing: if facing opposite direction, reorient while unvlunerable and in the same frame the dragon punch is scheduled for launch in the next frame while the player is in a state of unvulnerabilty, the next frame the dragon punch is started, thus having two frames of unvulnerabilty (pre dragon punch reorientation frame, and dragon punch actual frame after the reorientation).

When facing the opponent, there is no reorientation and thus no unvulnerabilty and the dragon punch is scheduled for the next frame, and if the opponent hits in the pre dragon punch frame (the frame where the input is processed) then there is a hit.

This is just speculations of my part, but there is other bugs in SF2 (while reading the developpers, they for example stated that they forgot to tag some frames an unvulnerable).

An interesting article on SF2 from the original developper:

I'm pretty positive that Guile's flash kick beats dragon punch's priority in most of the scenarios. Also, imo, Ultimate SFIV is the best SF iteration ever!

No poll option for Street Fighter Alpha 3?? That was the best one!

Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Street Fighter Zero 3 are the same thing, no? And I agree that it is a quality Street Fighter offering.

I originally voted for Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, and for now I'll stand by that opinion. However Ultra Street Fighter IV is great fun to play, provided you can get over the quirky and at times rubbery graphics.

Also, don't forget SNK vs Capcom. For such ageing Neo Geo hardware the game turned out quite well and is sadly often overlooked.

So busy scanning for the word "alpha" I overlooked "zero".
