I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment.

A good game is a good game regardless of age, format, genre etc, that is the most important thing. I'm sure most people on here feel the same way too.

I subscribe that.

i.e., Every time I think Turrican II, I don't think retro per se, because for me, even today, has the same appeal that had in 1991. One of the best games ever.

My Amiga was not retro in 1999. Because was my main computer for eleven straight years. It did at that time everything I needed it to do for my life.

When it started to go retro for me? When my PC started to be my main platform in 2001. The same for my PS1, when I bought a PS2. And the same for the PS2 when i bought the PS3.

For my 5 year old daughter the A500 she plays is not retro. It's the main computer!

To point out that retro is also what was said before on previous posts, but when it starts, it's utterly subjective.

I see.... bunch of strange people..

I like the word retro, it reminds me of.... wait, what was that word....

Of course Turrican 2 is retro - I found it in 'Retrogamer magazine'. Isn't that proof enough??

Oh dear, it's like I thought it will be... at least we have something to talk about
Let's modify the Wikipedia (look for 'Retrogaming') entry till it fits our needs

The concept of the game is timeless, the implementation of it is quite retro though

Anyway i began wondering about wether that was technically retro now seing as its now two console generations behind so i thought id ask for your opinions on this. I know this isn't directly an amiga related thread but the amiga still has people developing for it correct so if your definition of retro heads down that route then is the amiga retro?

Personally i think that two or three generations behind is a good standpoint for classification but what do you think?
Retro is for machines that are no longer made, but people still have fond memories of the machine and its games.

Age of machine and capabilities isn't entirely relevant, as the Sega Dreamcast was better than the Playstation 2 in quite a few areas, still a shame that machine didn't get the full life it deserved.

For me, retro is is when you sit down with the kids at a machine like the C64 and say something like "This game was the best game ever" with fond memories of playing it when you were their age.

I'd say it when it's no longer supported by the manufacturer and you can no longer buy one by going into a shop.

I had one of these

Cool cause I got it for 20 GBP, back in 1984-85, the company I worked for built them 'n' the order was cancelled so they had loads to sell really cheaply. I'd call this retro cause I don't really think it even got off the ground

Edit: Quote from wikipedia 'After the initial manufacturing run of 80,000 units it is not believed that any further units were made, making the Enterprise an extraordinarily collectible item in Europe. When Enterprise (the company) was wound up in Europe, 20,000 units were shipped to Hungary where it appears a strong user community formed'
