I removed the top shield, not the bottom one, and this drive seems to have needed it for support, but I am not going back that way.
Wha was interesting though, was that the Amiga got no power during that issue. There was nothing on screen and the CF-IDE light did not come up.

On re-assembly, I realized one of the ROMs' pins was bent, seems like my friend bent it when reinstalling them. So no idea what that could have created but surely nothing good.

This machine seems to be haunted indeed, I'm gonna make another thread for another problem.

I'm going to go ahead and blame the power supply on all this nonsense. I'm now using one of my other Amiga's power supplies, and everything seems to be running fine.

The old power supply did shit the bed though, so I guess be careful about aftermarket PSUs found on ebay. My gut feeling is that this one, although advertised as capable to run on 110V, wasn't really up to the task, and somehow killed itself (and some Amiga parts) when connected to 110BV instead of 220V
