I never knew Hacker & Hacker 2 were also available on the Amiga. I might check them out, liked those a lot on the C64.

Well, virtually every Amiga 1000 owner got the 256k upgrade, so they could run many more games than this.

But I agree, excellent thread.. ;-)

sorry, you have reply very soon, but i check better and Delta Patrol don't start with 256k or memory. At least start and load workbench screen, but then you have no more memory to start from icon.

What if you don't load WB? Just boot and launch the game directly.
I would imagine that was how the game might have been originally distributed.

Delta Patrol in the Tosec load in worbench minimal environment and then you have to double click its icon to start.

Yep, but you can just CTRL-D while it is booting to not load the startup-sequence (so not load workbench).
But I just did that with a 256k WinUAE machine and I get Error 103 (not enough memory).
So Delta Patrol needs more than 256k also...

doesn't this ADD21k script work on 256k env. ? 21k is 10% of the total machine memory could be worth a shot for those borderline games.

I'm sure WB isn't needed, just modify the startup-sequence to skip and load the game directly.

Presumably developers moved on to 512k this quickly because 256k just wasn't enough for the Amiga hardware to 'breathe' and have any real use made of it? Same goes for the 128k in the original Macintosh I guess. The Infocom games aside there's nothing impressive for a 256k Amiga really - you were still better off with an 8-bit at that point.

I wonder whether it would be possible to redesign typical 512k Amiga games to run in 256k, or specifically develop a 256k game as a challenge? How much work would it take to get simpler early 512k games like Bubble Bobble, IK+ or Arkanoid to run on it? Presumably it'd mean losing any music, certainly limiting to 16 colours, and probably more loading as well.

Hack (the precursor to Nethack) featured on a very early Fred Fish disk. Might be worth checking?
