Doggy style
Personally, I use a frontend called D.O.G. with DOSBOX. It is a very good frontend but also Erik the main dev. is a very kind person who will take any of your remark into consideration.
In my D.O.G. game list, I have profiles for such titles as Carmageddon, Broken Sword... |

Long time ago I wrote tutorial for DOSBox and provided a lot of help to people who couldn't install/start games.
I used D-Fend at the time as front end, but now you have to get different new front end. IMHO, it still helps to learn first basics of DOS and setup before you use front ends. As favorite way to play old DOS games I still like more my old P133 widnows 98 setup with DOS shotcuts. Those shortcuts if set correctly make your Win98 the best option to play dos games. I wrote tutorial on how to setup those shortcuts (different shortcuts with different configuration - for example with or without CD rom - also with good memory utilization) but I couldn't find it any more. If someone needs it, I can install Win98 on Virtual PC and help with setup and other stuff that you need to make best DOS setup. Also if you need help with DOSBox, let me know. I'm sure we can figure out something. EDIT: Here is DOSBox tutorial. Last edited by Anubis; 24 October 2008 at 18:01. Reason: Added link to tutorial... |

Search for the game on 'the old computers dot com' and when you download it and unzip it don't run JIM.EXE but instead type: Code:
install c: (otherwise controls don't work) Hope this helps. ps. That game has nice visuals for it's time. |

i guess this turned into an interesting thread any suggestions on how to start Ajax? (the farthest i get is a prompt to insert a floppy)
are there PC Booter/DOS games that have yet to be dumped? is anyone making an effort to preserve this type of software and to what success? what about Demon Attack, Night Stalker & Super Boulderdash? if there's one thing i remember best about Super Boulderdash, it is the title screen music |

Well I don't need *all* dos games as a lot of them were pure crap that should burn in hell for ever costing money. There are some nice and huge dos collection torrents floating around mininova that gave me most of what I needed (search for "dos collection memories project").

I play them on real PC's, why? because it's more fun asnd you get the chance to learn about how a PC really works after using several cool soundcards in the same PC etc
Have found thru extensing testing and use that these types of PC's are the sweet spot for respective era: Games up to circa 1988 = 286 PC Games 1989-1993 = 386DX 33mhz PC (with cache) Games 1994--> Pentium 200-233mhz, an AMD K6 is fine too In these PC's I use Roland Lapc-I's, Sound Blaster from model 1.0 up to 16, Gravis Ultrasound soundcards, Roland SCC-I GM/GS midi card, different MPU-401 cards hooked up to a Roland CM-500 or CM32L With this hardware you get max compatability and enjoyment..and it's real hardware....placebo stuff here |
