No, Worm Wars isn't in the list. But, here's Extreme Violence!
Number 14 - Extreme Violence Even though, it is slightly unfair (the winner of each round keeps their weapons, while the loser keeps none), this is a top 2 player game. Two little men round run an arena, filled with randomly generated boxes and try to kill each other. There are some weapons to collect - bouncy bullets, bullets that go through walls, laser gun. Other useful bonuses are a view of the whole arena and extra points. Not a very advanced game, but very addictive. |

MF Tanks indeed is the only battlezone game I played more than the real Battlezone ... excellent stuff
Extreme Violence I think it's rather crap.... maybe it's because I only played it fairly recently, through emulation ... if you guys like it, try the PC freeware Game C-Dogs, it has the same concept ... damn shame, it seems like no one has registered tanx 'n' stuff .. .... |

Number 13 - Tetris Pro
A decent version of Tetris, with a goal of revealing a picture on each screen, by removing the rows of blocks. The popularity of Tetris meant that many shareware versions were attempted and many were successful. More successful than the commercial releases, in fact. |

And why shouldn't they be more successful? The commercial games were paid for would be the strategy, thus they wouldn't have to worry too much about how much people liked it. The shareware ones would need to ensnare people to get them to pay for it.

I mean that they were more successful in recreating a good version of Tetris on the Amiga.

Oh like that. Well sure I guess they were. I haven't played all that many different versions of tetris on the Amiga. The version I've played most have to be Tritus. But that's not serious Tetris more battle tetris.

Number 12 - Biplane Duel
Classic two-player action in the game where you have to fly your aeroplane round the screen and shoot each other. Control isn't easy at first, but with a little practice you can fly around with few problems, except for stalls every now and again. |

The white has spoken. And he's right. It is his list. You could make your own list if you really want to see it in a top 20.

Number 11 - Trick Or Treat
Texture-mapping isn't common in shareware games and even though it's done very simply here, it makes Trick Or Treat stand out from other games. It's a two-player maze combat game with machine guns, viewed from a first-person perspective - so, a sort of deathmatch-type game. What makes it fun are the power-ups, which help you or hinder the other player. The bonuses do things such as jamming the other player's gun, blinding him or speeding yourself up. Lots of fun when beer has been consumed! |

Number 10 - Knights
Knights is another two player game (most of the best PD games are multiplayer) where you each must explore a dungeon, setting traps for the other player and generally battling it out. It's kind of like a medieval Spy vs Spy, with nice touches, such as the randomly generated dungeons... |

Number 9 - Cybernetix
It's Defender! It's Asteroids! It's...Cybernetix! Cybernetix is a shareware game from the people who made other great games like Roadkill and Overkill. It's a simple sideways-scrolling shoot-'em-up with asteroids which break into smaller pieces, enemy ships and bonuses to collect. It's another example of how the shareware scene could exceed the quality of commercial releases. |

This game is simply brilliant. If you only buy one PD/SW game this year...erm, let me rephrase that. If you are just reading these reviews, but not trying the games, then you must make an exception and give this game a go.

Number 8 - Super Obliteration
Shareware and PD is good for taking interesting ideas from other games and mixing into one game. Here it's Asteroids (or possibly Pang) and Turrican which has been 'remixed'. You've got to control the Turrican character to shoot the flying rocks in classic Asteroids style. It all adds up to a top shoot-'em-up, with a number of screens and options. |
