Any modern CF type 2 compatible device should work.

When using the 44pin press on IDE adapter the orientation of the adapteris generally right leaning, that is to say that the the CF card plugs into the device on the right,

heres a rough pic on my a600 of what i am on about.

please check as its possible that it may not fit this way

Yup, I put it that way. I'll tell you after today, I am preparing my CF card and inserting it in the Amiga for its first silent boot ever

I just need to read up on the SFS docs... I hope it's not hard to configure that... If you can hint a brother...

OK I am confused.

I have read in this thread like 215381678 different MAXTRANSFER values from you, Zetro.
0x1fe00000, 0x1fe00, 0x1fe000, each and every one of them translates differently after I set it up (0x1fe00 changes to 0x0001fe00)

Can you PLEASE tell me the exact 8 digit hex valie that gees after 0x?

hope that help.

Yep, on some versions you will need to pad the trailing zero's

Fun Fun Fun and My a1200

I have now joined the CF Club :-)

Using a Kingston 1GB Elite Pro x50 CF card with CF-IDE adaptor, works absolutely fine, PCMCIA port is fine, 3com 3C589D Combo installed.

CF card running through DCE/Phase5 IDEFIX Express with CDROM drive. On a Microsoft Windows Network, Amiga running Samba and AExplorer with Internet / Local Network Access - yay!!

Just seems a little weird switching on the a1200 and complete silence!

Next I'm going to upgrade Dopus4.16 to the Magnum II and remove Workbench, and see how things go from there.

Will do, not an application I use, however, I will install and test it for the record for other users of interest.

PS: Many thanks to all the people who have posted there CF experiences here, it has been a very useful resource, and to Abime who got me interested in trying this out for myself. Total cost £34 Ebay, result "priceless" - lol.

0x001fe000 is correct. It will pad the beginning with zeroes, but that doesn't change the actual number.

a1200 Under Da Hood in May 08

I've taken some photos of my a1200 with a CF adaptor to share with others.

A project inspired by reading Abime threads.

Pros: Fast, Reliable, Cool (in very sense of the word), No Moving Parts, and looks great! "The New Hotness" :-)

Cons: Where I've flipped the HD caddy around, it covers the Clock Port access. (not actually using the HD, so could be removed). IDEFIX Express (over gayle) doesn't give me enough clearance behind the keyboard when seated to allow for an internal CD ROM drive, like user Zetro has done in his a600. But I'm sure with some persistance I could get one in there!

Also Electroblasters', idea of positioning the CF Adaptor on top of the PCMCIA looks quite interesting.

Cheers,

Skippy

@Skippy

!!!AWESOME!!!

Thanks very much for the hardware pr0n I am loving the toothbrush mod that gets a 5 star rating! !!!!

also perhaps to some more important is that you have this mod working with an IDEFix Express AWESOME stuff!!! its great to see...

all that left is to throw that old HDD away... get rid of the caddy, invest in some velcro (for non-kinky purposes) and Viola!

A very impressive bit of work sir! !

to get the IDE->CF adapter over the PCMCIA port you would need the 44pin vairent with the male connector. as this is just low profile enough to fit under the keyboard

All this hardware pr0n excitement (Evidence of very old A1000 HHD mod) etc has made me thirsty, time for a coffee break, then poodle about with AWeb_APL34_full_030.lha.

I'm still tinking about with the a1200, the HD/caddy I've only left in there so I know where it is.. (lol)

The IDEFix I used because I -

1. networked a1200 to winxp, dumped all WB OS hd into a folder on xp.
2. created a floppy disk with cachecdfs and dopus4.16 (jolliet support)
3. removed hd, installed CF device/card. (card config'd using HDtoolbox)
4. dragged a win98 box across the room to the a1200, 'borrowed' cdrom via ide cable to a1200 idefix, powered by win98. (to give me cdrom access)
5. on winxp burnt WB OS folder to CD rom, put CD in win98 drive, booted a1200 from floppy and used dopus to transfer everything on to CF card.
6. switch off, removed all unnessaries, and boot from cf card - yay!

Obviously had to tweak the OS being a dump and not a fresh build.

But, anyways, a round-about way of getting things going..

IDEFix disabled in startup-sequence, hangs with CF card, it was 02.00am when I was doing this, so just left it. However, Mount CD0: (cachecdfs) worked without it - strange. (i was rushing things because I was tired)

*** ADDED - PS: What's stopping/cause of the reasoning why the HDD led no longer works and is there a fix for this??

AGH, I am getting stupid checksum errors now....
I don't know what is happening, the maxtransfers rate is set at what it used to be mentioned here.

How much lower do I need to put it? Pisses me off because I have to backup everything again to make this run ARGH

now i get this VOLUME "WORKBENCH" NOT VALIDATED bullshit!! AGH

I have decreased maxtransfer one octet, we'll see what happens now.

I am scared of my other partition though.

Is this right? I changed the MAXTRANSFERS parameter and HDInstToiols said I would loo se all data on the drive, but when I resetted, all the data was there.

changing MAXTRANSFERS does not delete all my HD data?

Nope it only changes the buffer size of the blocks set in the RDB i believe, Thomas / Jope would know more. the only time you lose data is IF you change the drive geometry and or delete the master TOC
