Just been farting around with all my old favourite games.Sorry the rips are a bit untidy but I`m trying to find a simple editing program that was as simple as Dpaint IV.

BAH!
I couldn't get GFXRip working before because I made the mistake of believing a readme. WinUAE saves are compressed by default now but nothing indicates that if you don't already know! It simply says "uae snap-shot file" in the save dialog and you have to suspect other types of saves do exist too but this poor documentation prevents you to find this out. It would be better if the program hadn't come with any documentation at all.

I just loaded the UNCOMPRESSED alcatraz save state and immediately discovered the sprites. Will attach them here soon.

ps: In fact I remember reading an ancient winuae log mentioning the compressed save states but not having used the function for months I easily forgot that.

Sorry. Picture 2 is Chuck rock enemy sprites and the other 2 pics are from switchblade 2.Under the file name on the save state option is an option to save as either compressed, uncompressed or raw data dump.

From the file requester that pops up after clicking "save state" in the misc tab.

Change the "Save as type" which is "UAE Snap-Shot Files (*.uss)" by default. Change this into "RAM dump (*.dat)" Maybe the other type (Uncompressed) is OK too.

I'm having lots of fun with this tool now but Alcatraz isn't an easy one. I think I need to use ST mode with it.

Ta daa!!!!

Not if you increase the sprite high such a high number that they are displayed on top of each other. Rest is easy photoshop work.

Only thing that baffled me was that the head part of the dog sprites were stored with 16 width whereas everything else including the body of the dog was 32!

I love this tool now, shame an useful documentation doesn't exist.

And since I learned how to work with gfxrip I can start bitching.

@people who have ripped nice sprites on BLACK background:
Your efforts might be great but unless you export the sprites on a different background color than those used in the sprites, your rips are useless! There is no way to fix a sprite that is blended into the background color unless you redraw the contours or rip again.

You only need to press B to make the background magenta before exporting with P! Please!

Here is the transparent png rip from Alcatraz.
Your image viewer may display a black background but it is in fact transparent. Use firefox to display, photoshop to edit.

Good thin should be save position/bitplanes/and mode - I am ripping AB SE right now, every level has the same parameters - so saving and loading position if gfx rip will be very usable there
