We decided internally not to pack things with 7-Zip except for CD images.

I'm syncing the "TOSEC - Non-Amiga" folder with my local drive and I have a spreadsheet and thread to keep track of it all.

It might be better if I update the folder rather than moving folders in bulk.

Cody is in charge of the TOSEC folders. He just posted that he'll update them.

Don't do that. 7z is not widely used for such things for a reason.

Now that CPU and RAM are no issue it is less of a problem.
Big discussion, probably not for this thread. It has to do with how 7z handles compression and making it into a single "brick" that has to be expanded fully to extract something, unlike zip.

It's similar to the "Create a solid archive" option of WinRAR.
When used, all the files are considered/queued as a whole, big file and this can save some more space during compression (because the compressor can scan a single big file searching for recurring patterns etc.).
The drawback is related to reliability: if some errors occur on the media where the compressed file is stored, a normal archive will allow to recover all the files not affected by the archive errors. For a solid archive it's much more difficult.

7z always uses its solid archive "mode" for the .7z format.
I prefer using WinRAR (without the solid archive option) .

7-Zip isn't a good choice for real Amiga hardware.

I've been using DynDNS for over 20 years to handle the Dynamic IP of grandis.nu. Its also used for ftp.grandis.nu och ftp2.grandis.nu. Since Oracle purchased it, it has somewhat gone to crap so I've cancelled the service now and replaced it. Not much choice as they cancel my Standard DNS service at the end of May with no way to extend it, except for moving it into the Oracle cloud blablabla system. Not going to happen.

Just in case something goes wrong in the coming hours/days, here are the IPs you might need.

ftp2.grandis.nu = 95.217.105.104
ftp.grandis.nu = 94.23.202.100

I swear, Oracle ruins everything they touch. (Except for Java, that was already terrible.)

As a format, there's nothing wrong with it, and with WinUAE and probs FS-UAE it's fine (only used FS-UAE with WHDLoad stuff)

However, if you have more than Amiga stuff, 7-zip becomes a bit a of a problem as few emulators support it.

The space saving is minimal (I know I have done it previously)

The only worthwhile project i can see that involves 7-zip is doing a parent and clone dat, the space saving with this would be significant.

It's a ball ache though, I attempted to do it, but quickly lost interest. Quicker to buy another HDD.

Maybe Crashdisk could knock something up that does this in an automated fashion, otherwise this is days worth of work every time TOSEC release new dats.

We have plenty of space left on all mirrors, so I say prioritize convenience before saving space.
