Removing yellowing from Amigas with peroxide - Page 16

I went to the local Sally Beauty today and they don't sell 18% Hydrogen Peroxide any more, apparently the bomb squad stopped them from selling it and the highest concentration they now stock is 12%.

The cost of this was around £5 for a litre..

Would this be good enough? Assume it would, but will just take longer under the UV light..?

Thanks tonyyeb, I'll get some next week, that's probably when my UV tubes will arrive, I've already got the Vanish Oxi Action, it was £3.99 for a huge tub from Home Bargains.

I think that Zetr0 mentioned earlier on in the thread that after the plastic has been de-yellowed it may need treating to prevent it yellowing again, I was wondering if anyone has come up with a solution for that yet?

How long do you think it would take to yellow again.. weeks, months, years? (same time as it originally took to yellow?) curious about this.

Clear lacquer, that's all you need after the treatment. Or opaque tarnish.

After lacquer/tarnish expect yellowing only when your grandson is over 90!

i am new here
and i've been reading the whole thread
and i must say it is a very cool chemical procedure
i congratulate the person who came up with the method

i have a small question
would this procedure remove yellowing from any plastic?
for example my SNES and/or NES?

this method does deserve more attention (that's what i think)
i've read countless articles of how to remove the yellowing off of my SNES
and from the looks of proofs and pictures
it seems this is the best way to leave it like new (not using other methods such as dissolving plastic, sandpaper the cover, or painting it)

i had another question
i understand the recommended concentration is 30% but from reading along lower concentrations work just as well but require more time (under UV light)
so
if i were to do this to my SNES
i would have to mix the right ingredients into a tank
and leave the case inside the mixture for some hours
while the case is inside the tank leave it under UV light (or sun right?)
so the only thing that had me in doubt was
do i have to leave the case inside the mixture while under UV light?

but thanks anyway

and the explanation of this method makes it pretty obvious why it works
i wonder why someone else hasn't thought of this before =]

yep submerge the item in the solution for the time needed, as Merlicious states, if you are using sunlight to provide UV, be carefull of the temperature as this *may* slightly warp the plastic due to heat.

a good 60 watt darklight UV bulb will give more consistant results, just remember not to give your eyes a suntan and watch out for small children

I am afraid it isn't; the liability attached to selling it is too great. If you want some neat TAED, PM me some deets and I'll post some out to you.

Mind you, if you can't be bothered to go to Sally, Tesco and Maplin's there isn't much hope for you.....

This method works, tried and tested in the UK, USA, and New Zealand.

You will be better off making the gel version and using 10 to 15% strength peroxide, along with 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoonful of "Oxy" per pint of peroxide. Blend it up in a liquidiser or with a hand blender. A small amount of Glycerine also helps the gel form. You are looking for the consistency of hair gel or wallpaper paste, so that it will cling to vertical surfaces. A pint of gel goes a long way when brushed on...

All of the ingredients are readily available to the average Joe. Just remember to wear gloves and safety glasses or goggles, peroxide can cause burns.

I have a question regarding the C64 you cleaned however. I have a boxed one and on the box picture, it is actually beige, not grey..

The finished case is a "stone" colour, sort of a beige/grey; the outside now matches the inside that never saw daylight.
