A quick update here to say the vertical scrolling is in progress. For some reason I'm finding this difficult to do, it is a real brain teaser.
The process of doing it effectively means you have to split the video display in two at a Y position and display the upper half and lower half of the display. I have not implemented the copper routine yet but it is close. As you can see, round 5 is implemented here and I have put triggers in place via the tiles to switch off/on the background blitting, enable/disable vertical scrolling and trigger the round starting and ending. The difficulty comes in that the rounds with vertical scrolling all have different geometry to the standard rounds which are 176 tiles by 12. Anyway, here's the updates. The mangled Youtube version ... [ Show youtube player ] The WinUAE version that I pretty much see while testing... http://109.228.4.199/rygar_13.avi Taking a break now as off on my holiday! yiihhh hahh.. Geezer |

I don't go on holiday until tomorrow.
So with that said... here's the vertical scrolling now implemented (with a couple of bugs though... but no biggies). To say I'm happy with this is an understatement! Youtube... [ Show youtube player ] What I see... straight from WINUAE http://109.228.4.199/rygar14.mp4 I'm happy now... can enjoy my jolly. Geezer |

I was giving a bit of thought today on how i could improve the game over and above what it is now and i’m considering adding an option to search for pieces (impossible mission style) in each of the rounds.
I guess from a story perspective you i’m thinking about scattering pieces of ‘the sword of argus’ that rygar must find. So i’m thinking about an arcade and story mode option. What do people think about the idea? Geezer |

I think it's a pretty good idea actually
The only question I came up with is how that would work given the rather linear progression of the levels (as in, there are no separate paths/mazes in the levels). I guess you could hide them in invisible tiles or put them in hard to reach spots? Or perhaps hide them as drops from specific monsters/chains of monsters? But the basic idea, yeah - sounds good! |

I'm of the opposite view; personally I think just sticking with the original is what everyone has been dying to have on the Amiga.
You have enough work to do on this without adding other "modes" ...but obviously it's your port though so do as you see fit |

I'd love to have a story mode if you feel that there's time and space for that!
@Hewitson thx for the info! |

on the NES Rygar is in story mode and not a straightforward port, maybe create an alternate map set for it?

Just a quick status update.
Development will start again early November time as I have some pretty heavy work commitments that I need to divert my attention to. Off topic but what am I actually doing you might ask? I work in IT security so I am gearing up to do this bad boy. https://www.qa.com/hot-topics/cyber-...ploitation-awe Normally Offensive Security only run this course at Black Hat in Vegas which is a stretch for my employer to justify, however for a one time only date they are coming to London which I've been able to justify. I already have the OSCP and OSCE certs so the final and most demanding cert is the OSEE but you have to complete the Advanced Windows Exploitation course beforehand. Wish me luck, I'll need it. Defo mate! Will PM you closer to the time! I'm in London all week w/c 22 Oct.
I'll try adding an update this weekend, probably the disk armor if I have enough time! |

After spending the last month preparing and then doing an intense training course I've now had a chance to have a little rest and power back up.
I literally did not touch the source code for an entire month and I've spent a couple of hours this morning getting back into things, I've added the second fire-button code in the process so I'm just about ready to code the disk armor which is a bit complex. I'm sure at some point I'll do a video of my progress. The vertical scrolling is implemented but fairly buggy..but no show stoppers. After the disk armor I'll do some sprite Y Axis sprite clipping which is needed too. On another note while I was in London I had the pleasure of having a couple of beers with @DamienD who I have to conclude is an absolute top fella. We had a few beers and then went and played on some arcade games at a place near Kings X (I was definitely better at Wonder Boy mate ) It's a shame I couldn't have stayed out a bit longer but I really needed to be fresh for that course.... next time we'll have a good supp. Geezer |
