If you have an 020 CPU, this will never have a built in MMU, it will always be a separate chip. Basically only present in the A2620 board, I'm not aware of other Amiga 020 cards with the MMU.

If you have an 030, then the MMU will be present if it is a full 030, not an EC030.

Usually a MMU is part of the CPU (don't know if external exists) but not every CPU has one.

There was an external MMU for the 68020 which was used for UNIX systems. It's number is the 68851. It was integrated onto the CPU die to become the 68030.

Hmmm I have an ACA1233n-40 so I think it is EC030.

What is the difference then between these?

silly question,

But how do I remove the keyboard ribbon from the motherboard on a A500/1200?

Do I just pull or is there a clip mechanism??

I want to pull my 500 down for cleaning.

A500 - just pull
A1200 - lift up the retaining clip around the keyboard connection ribbon. It has a little lip you can use

Here's one I recently run into (and it fits this thread perfectly, I'm somewhat embarrassed for even asking ): can you update a WHDLoad slave without needing to reinstall the game from original disks?

Some of my original disks are no longer co-operating with the installation process and it would be nice if I could take an already installed version and update the slave to the most recent one without needing to start over

Most often it is enough to replace the slave. Sometimes the data files need to be moved into a directory (often called "data"), but whdload will complain about missing files in this case and it should be pretty obvious to solve based on the error message.

But there are times when slaves are totally rewritten and the data files are no longer compatible, so you need a reinstall.

In most cases yes, but usually the readme should tell you about. Alternatively you can take Retroplays pre-installed service.

Continuing my WB Classic ClassicWB quest, is it possible to install it on a hdf bigger than the one it came on? Or somehow "expand" the original one? I'd like to use it on a ~2GB hdf...

ClassicWB installs on any size HDF but moving an installation is done simply by copying all files e.g. using 'COPY SYS:#? TO NEWSYS: ALL' where NEWSYS: is the boot partition on the larger drive.
AFAIK it is not possible to resize an existing partition without losing its contents.

Thank, you I will try moving it. I just thought that the install is tied to the system.hdf that comes in the ClassicWB archive. How would I install it from scratch on some other one?

It's been a few years since I did an install of CWB but as I remember it, it came as a system.hdf like you mention which did not contain any copyrighted WB files plus an install script. The install script would then copy from the system.hdf to DH0: while asking for WB disks to merge in the missing files. So the target DH0: could be any size partition.

Ok, copying has worked, so now I have my own hdf with WB on it - thx for help everybody.

It is just one huge 2GB partition though. I don't really mind, being a Windows person and all, just wondering if anything bad can happen because of that? (I just play games really)

You're doomed!!

Nah it's fine, although it's easier to reinstall the system files if it's on its own partition, with your data in another one.

Hardly. I always make one huge PFS3 partition for everything in my machines and am yet to experience one of those horrific failures people keep warning about.

Been a PFS2/3 user almost exclusively since about 1998.
