I've built a special 060 version for the TF1260 that doesn't need an FPU.

Awesome, thanks for this! Just a clarification, this applies to LC060 CPUs, not necessarily tied to the TF1260 per se. It actually runs, even if very slowly (as expected), but basically this means that stuff can be compiled for the 060 without the FPU code so that's great news because it lets us use these (currently) very affordable CPUs. |

Ignoring how it would actually be about 1fps, will this version run on an 030 as I would love to attempt to load it on my TF330 CD32 for sheer amusement as I was a top Quake(world) player back in the day. I suspect though it may use 060 specific instructions not in the 030?

It might run but it's really not designed for an 030

Got it running on my CD32 with a tf330 50mhz, well when I say running....
With mipscale and mipmap up high, minimum view size, no sound, talking a frame every 2-3 seconds I'm sure I got 15fps or so out of a slow 486 back in the day. Does the fpu really make that much difference? Doom runs well on this for example Anyway, thanks for recompiling it, I'm happy that I got it to actually load |

That's on par with what I remember: Quake needed a Pentium. |

Well, I'm talking about 20yr old memories plus I would always run it with mipscale etc up high so it was almost flat shaded, almost no textures. I still did this years later with faster kit to lock it to 120fps or so. I was in the top uk clan for quakeworld back in the day hence the nostalgia trip

Yep I remember Quake really needed a Pentium if you wanted it to be enjoyable when running in software mode, that all changed when 3D graphics cards came out of course.
I did run it on my 486 back in the day but I remember is really struggled LoL Just a quick reminder at how well an overclocked 060 can run AmiQuake [ Show youtube player ] |

Yes quake is written for the FPU, that's why it runs slow on integer. Although there is a mod called PocketQuake that has been modified to run without an FPU.

It is really playable and even movies are working. |

For Quake's timedemo demo3 at 320x200. Pentium 90 Mhz + 430VX chipset reached 24.3 fps. The video card's performance can impact frame rates e.g. Diamond Stealth 64 (S3 Vision968) PCI with Pentium 100Mhz has 27.60 fps results. Diamond Viper V330 4MB PCI (nVidia RIVA 128) + Pentium 100Mhz has 28.40 fps. Number Nine Imagine 128 (Cirrus Logic GD5422) + Pentium 100Mhz has 20 fps. During DOS era Doom and Quake era, 2D video card accelerator's performance must be factored in along with the CPU. My 1996 era classic Pentium 166Mhz (64-bit 66 Mhz FSB) + 430VX + S3 Trio 64V PCI (32-bit 33 Mhz bus) is alot faster than 20 fps. I didn't select Cirrus Logic. I'm already looking at nVidia RIVA 128. Significant bottleneck for 68060 is the AGA chipset or limitations of the Buster chip. Last edited by hammer; 30 September 2020 at 01:39. |

What is the fastest 68K quake version that has support for extended map size etc..?
While vanilla quake is nice for nostalgia most new maps produced by the community for the last 15 years or so really require a pimped up engine as opposed to the vanilla engine. So ok, tweaking the fps on the Amiga for historical/nostalgical purposes is a thing, but wouldn't it be nice if you could play something else than timedemo ;-) Btw @Str0m, this is another fella that likes to hurt himself ;-) [ Show youtube player ] (Quake on a 386) |

Cost competitive A1200 based 68060 at 75 to 100Mhz in 1995 would do the job in holding back RISC based game consoles. Amiga Technologies Walker specs with 68030 40Mhz in 1995 wan't competitive. Intel's X86 rapid evolution road map from 1993 to 1996 was important in holding off mid-1990s RISC based competitors. |
