If you want to keep your PM for archive purpose, you can also download them.
I removed many PM's, more than 50. Anyway most of EAB features are extended, f.e. The Zone, then PM limit can be enhanced too. 200 PM's can be good for beginner users for first 2-3 years of activity.

As RCK suggests, just prune the messages you don't want to keep, and download the rest before deleting the whole lot. Do this with both inbox and outbox.

I've been doing this for years and I haven't had any problems with the current system. tbh I see no real justified reason to increase this limit, it was fine when I first joined and it's fine now.

Send a message via ICQ to lilalurl
I think I understand Don_Adan's point of view.

I don't really need it on EAB, although my PM box is almost alwyas full (well, I like clutter for those who remember the Desktop thread in the OT section a while ago ).

But on another board, dedicated to Unreal Tournament 2004, I wrote and received a lot of PMs related to map developments. The question of increasing the number of PMs stored was raised and I was among those in favour of it.

It can be very convenient to have a repository of messages that you can check from anywhere and easily accessible when you need to copy/paste things to the forums (or other PMs). Or even send yourself a PM with quoted texts from differents posts/messages.

I guess that Don_Adan (and probably some other coders/Whdload slave writers/etc...) functions that way, hence his request.

Wow! Thanks, RCK!

I would never have thought of asking for it, but that really is a great help.

How unfair. I want as many PM's as the mods. No, wait. I got no friends, so i don't get any PM's...

Anyway, the main reason behind the limitation is drive space, right? What sort of storage are we on, and what are the limits for say, images, and such?

Here are the server details: http://old.abime.net/?go=about
HOL and AMR are on the same server... might get crowdy here (not because of the PM increase)

Right, I'm gonna become lazy and cease to delete my PM's just to see how much of a mess I can make of things

Still, thanks again RCK

My message to RCK: CAN I HAVE YOUR BABIES PLEASE?

Upping the PM capacity today feels like a large weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I've been terribly lax when it comes to pruning my inbox as much as possible while keeping a lot of handy information inside it (which is the majority in my case). I know you can save messages to a file and all but I don't exactly keep track of all my backups and I seem to find it quicker (ironically enough) to just pay my inbox on here a visit instead.

So gracias to Monsieur Arr-See-Kay!

Crap. Were still on Ultra 320 drives which means i cant even offer a couple of SAS drives as a means to expand the file area & PM boxes. Well, i asked at least. (on top of everything my SAS dives are the same size as the current drives, i just got more of them)
Guess i'll stick to my first plan, and try to sell them, and buy regular sATA drives for my Windows Home Server 2011.
Thats been my plan for like a year...

Attachement & Avatars are on harddrive with direct access.
PM are all stored into SQL database, and the bigger the table for PM is, the slower the requests to retreive PM will be, that's why I want a limit.

Today I removed the vbSEO plugin from EAB.
It was a great product to have nice "content relevant" URL, but it was also eating a lot of CPU and making slowdown everywhere.
From what I have mesured here, the board is now 3 times faster

If I want back nice URL in futur, I would need to change the server CPU or change the forum engine.

I've just noticed a problem with the menu bar for the first time.

It looks like the "Community" menu has partially auto-expanded.

Edit: It was a one-off. I can't make it happen again - even on that page!

Edit2: Hey, I thought I'd found another problem when the "Donate" link came up in green, but I guess that's intentional after all.

Same happened to me Prowler, at about 10:24-ish

I guess RCK was busy modifying something as with me too, it was a one off

Yep, I was working on navigation bar for guest and disable the DHTML popup for a few minuts, I have finished my work on it and everything should be stable now
Donate link was moved to right and painted in green.

I noticed that the old URLs were still valid after the new "content relevant" URLs were introduced. Could it have been that which caused the slowdown?

Though I guess it would have caused too much disruption if the ability to parse the old URLs had been dropped.
