So here i am with nothing to do so i decide to remove the bad CIA chip off my 1200 after i fried it. I tried to remove the chip a little too soon and here is the damage... looks like the 2 pads i lifted are not used so hopefully no damage done... i guess i'll find out when i replace it ( as soon as i can find a replacement

Well it looks like more than two might not be used, which leads to this:
I read in another thread that you are after a replacement CIA, but of course A600/A1200 CIAs are hard to come by. The A1200 CIA has 44 connection points, but it appears not all of them lead anywhere. The socketed CIAs (eg, A2000) have only 40 legs. If you can obtain pinouts/datasheets for both CIA types, you may very well be able to use the older style CIA with a bit of hacking (make an adaptor PCB, or even just run fly wires from the PCB directly to the legs of the "wrong" CIA. Now we wait for replies from those who would know if this is indeed possible ![]() PZ. |

I just found this data sheet online... http://www.amiga-stuff.com/hardware/8520.html according to the specs it does look like the PLCC can be substituted with the 40 pin DIP... if i can't find a PLCC then i basically got no choice but to build myself a little adaper board and get out the trustee Soldering iron and a huge magnifying glass ![]() Anyone feel free to recheck my comparison of the 2 chips to see if they are indeed compatible |

The chips are totally compatible, that's for sure.
Only different form factor. Oh, and the PLCC chip was used on A600, 1200 and both versions of A4000 (desktop and tower). |

i found a place in Germany that sells both, if i can get the PLCC i'll get that first... if no other options i will mod the DIP to fit, only thing is it will get in the way of the scandoubler i getting, so i trying to leave options open

I got my CIA chip, soldered it on, was a little tricky on the back portion and the side with the plastic keyboard connector. I was going to use hot air but decided not to because of the heat so it was a case of tacking 2 opposite corners and then soldering the hard sides first then the easiest.
I had to revisit all the joints and then ... Its Alive!!!! ![]() All I/O options appear to be working good. Dont look at the plastic connector... i'm pretty sure it was like that before i started ![]() |

For the rest of you, I recommend a socket instead of soldering the new chip directly on there.. When you manage to burn your next CIA, you'll thank yourself. :-)
