(probably) Dum Crystall Oscillator question:
I think I already know the answer to this one so be gentle...
You want your computer to go faster or do something spooky? Change the oscillator & fingers crossed. A bit of a pain as it's trial-&-error, you end up with a bunch of 'spares', and some frequencies are hard to come by unless they are expensive made-to-order jobbies. So, does anybody know of any DIL14 / DIL8 'variable' oscillators..? ie: You have a range of say: 10-100mhz that can be altered 'variable resistor / potentiometer' style. PS I've seen 'Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillators' but trying to adapt these for the above purpose would be too much hassle for me. PPS And I've seen 'Digitally Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillators' which come with adjuster for 'ageing compensation'. So I guess it's not too outlandish a thought. I hope there is such a thing.... BUT I suspect the tolerance for frequency variation in an oscillator would be so slow that to mechanically adjust one would be impossible.... Perhaps a digital solution could exist???

There is some digital clock generators chips around, just go to http://alldatasheet.com and pick one.
I recommend PCK12429BD. It is a 25 to 400MHz programmable clock generator. Last edited by rkauer; 06 August 2008 at 02:19. Reason: info added |
