What 72-pin RAM and HD can I use with my 1200?

It's me again, and I'm still on the hardware trail.

Since old 72-pin simms and IDE drives are so cheap, I'm going to upgrade my RAM (6MB) and HD (320MB) on my 1200.

Currently I have a 3.5" IBM hard drive (had to cut away some of the metal shielding) that I installed in about 1995 and was thinking about grabbing a second hand 2.5" with at least 1 GB space as I've run out of room!

Will any laptop HD work? Does the standard laptop cable work fine with the 1200?

The FAST RAM is currently provided by a Hawk RAM board, populated with a 4MB 72-PIN Simm I ripped out of a PC a while back. I've tested both double-sided and single sided 72-pin simms in this board and they both work fine.

The max RAM this board supports via jumper is 8MB. Can I put any type of 72-pin simm (8MB or larger) in this baby, set the jumper and get the max 8MB?

Will EDO or larger simms (say 16MB) cause issues?

Thanks for your advice. I've checked auction sites, and I can do this upgrade for £20 or less!

I am not sure about your RAm board, I have no experience with it. However I can talk about the HD.. Yes, any 1GB 2.5"HD will work, and the cable should work as well...

Thanks Akira :

I've done some research on the RAM and any simm should work with this board as well.

I'm still a little worried about the cable though. Read something about a 44 pin high density for A1200/600's????

The current one I have is a special 40-44 pin so I can use 3.5" drives. I'm not going to get another larger 3.5" because I'm worried the current draw will be too high for the standard 24W PSU.

You want to ADD a drive or replace your current one? You can be OK with just one HD... two would kill the PSU eventually...

it IS a 44 pin cable, much more compact than the normal 3.5 incher... but this is how 2.5" drives are connected.

8mb is maximum with that memory card, if you want to add more ram you need to get accellator card wich can map memory addressis

Hi utri007. Thanks for the reply.

I already knew that 8MB is the max for this card (and indeed the fast ram limit on a standard 1200) like mentioned in my original post.

What I need to know is if I can place larger (say 16MB) and/or EDO simms in the card and still have no problems with compatibility, even though the max recognised will be 8MB.

16MB (and even 32MB) EDO simms seem to be the easiest to get hold of dirt cheap at the moment on ebay. The added benefit is I can use the larger capacity of the simm if I decide to buy an accelerator in the future.

After doing some reading on the internet, I'm sure I can get any size (>8MB) 72-pin simm for this board, set the jumper for 8MB and away I go!

Thumbs up RAM

I don't know if you can use EDO in that but you might want to look at Crucial Tech. It's top quality, pretty cheap and you can easily return/exchange it if it`s not compatible without paying a restocking fee.
