Arrow A4000 2,5" HD to SCSI "solution"...

Amiga , the adaptor loving machine....
LOL, my 4000 still on the test-bench... and it actually works FINE now... I needed to get "Active" terminators, not "LVD/SE" ones apparently...
also grabbed a 5400rpm 2.5" Hitachi 40GB HD , converted it to 3.5" with an adaptor from Amigakit , converted to scsi with an Acard7720UW.
and it works fine. wow. amazing. now the hd fits without any troubles inside.

Keropi - LVD/SE terminators *are* active. The SCSI-3 specificiation states this, there is no such thing (officially) as a passive LVD/SE terminator. Thats not to say that they are not made, of course.

@alewis: yes, in theory. I got lvd/se in the first place because they should be better. but those I got where not that good, or the WD 80GB HD I had on the acard did not work well. anyway, I am not really gonna investigate this, the combo I now have works flawlessly... gonna make a speed test soon to see if I reach the 27MB/s of the 80GB hd...

The photo tells the opposite. You should make another photo with all the parts fittet to their final position, just before you close the case.

lol thomas!
I just have it like that because I was testing it. it really fits on the original hd position. I still need to add a 50x50mm fan to blow at the csppc, and replace the g-rex fan, as sometimes it just stops working...
also, the speed of this little HD is the same as the 80gb I had , so I guess the acard/csppc scsi combo is maxed out

Have you seen how much A4k towers cost? It is a crime. And they are pretty low quality and boring as cases go.

Where did you get the IDE to SCSI converter? Are they expensive?

@keropi:
With a not that old SCSI-drive, you can reach some 30MB/Sec when reading through the filesystem. Raw reads should give a little bit more, but they arent exactly closer to real world performance. This ofcourse is with bigger chunks of data. Check these results out.

yeah, a real scsi HD should do better, but as I said before , a 3.5" HD does not fit... not to mention a 2.5" one draws less power, creates less heat, takes less space...
a4000 towers are all rare, dull and 95% they need their own busboard... so much for the g-rex...

@rare_j: the converter is a small card named: ACARD 7720UW . grabbed it from eBay for 70$ (they are expensive...) vesalia has some AFAIK...

@keropi:
There are 2.5" SCSI drives . Atleast seagate makes some, rather freakin expensive though .

Well currently you can only buy the Elbox tower and that includes a busboard + pci adapter in the price.. But yeah, it would be nice if you could get cheaper ones.

How much would you be willing to pay for my "wooden" eagle tower? It's sitting in my warehouse unused.

It has been painted over with a lacquer that gives a wood impression.. Like so:

Thanks Jope, but I was hoping to get some form of "enthusiasts" case, aluminium or perspex.

I'm now on the warpath to try and get an A4000T motherboard as they should "fit" in full Tower PC ATX cases.

I *think* they are compatible with the old AT layout and so compatible with ATX with an AT adapter backplate, but I could be wrong.

Anyone got an A4kT motherboard (plus daughter cards) for sale?

You're correct, the A4000T is built to the AT standard.. However the audio and floppy riser boards may not fit into every case..

The people who made the case are still in the PC case business, but unfortunately I can't remember who it was. :-/ Antec? Enlight?

All this talk of Amiga towers makes me want to build a good Amiga tower myself. Gotta take the A4k mobo out some day and go shopping for a suitable Midi-ATX case.. :-)

I've tried the Eagle case and now the machine is in an RBM Towerhawk, but that's not to my liking either. :-/ Perhaps this is one of those "gotta do it youself" things.
