Haven't seen yet the provided link but have always thought that the movie "Phase IV" ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phase_IV_(1974_film) ) was the inspiration of the game.

i thought the older 1950s film Them! would have been the inspiration, ofc i say that as ive only seen that film with regards to old giant killer ant movies.
