That thumb is your body telling you: maybe give it a rest for a while bro. I'm super serial about that.

My suggestion would be: to listen.

I agree its my left thumb - but while I'm on exercise bike i like to play something. I plugged in the old C64DTV and dont use my left thumb, but the selection of games is rubbish.

What about flightstick type joysticks? I.e., ones that you can use with only one hand (suction cups or heavy base) and are of the digital kind (not analogue PC flightsticks)? Anything new out there that isn't too expensive (below 50€)?

I'm hoping this won't last too long but I may pickup a cheap arcade stick.

I've never thought about it before but playing most modern consoles you really have to use your thumb etc.

the usb competition pro is very well made : real arcade micro switchs, metal shaft. Maybe a bit too stiff.

Yep, that's the one main difference between the DB9 and USB versions of the Competition Pro.

I have the original and the later one from Invividual computers, both (DE9) are stiff for me (in comparisson to other joystics). Issue with those that they are use a rubber buffer instead of spring, some lubricant (silicone grease is way better) may help there.
