Problem with floppy drive

Hi,
I have an Amiga 1200. With the original floppy disk drive:

scenaro 1
- I turn on the power
- without any disk in the drive the computer tries to access it on boot (the led lights up)
- it then boots off the hard disk
- Workbench shows DF0: DF1: DF2: and DF3: icons all with a question mark
- I insert a disk that is amiga formatted and nothing happens

scenario 2
- I insert an amiga formatted floppy into the drive
- I turn on the power
- the computer tries to boot off from the disk but it is not bootable (the led lights up)
- it then boots off the hard disk
- Workbench shows the name of the disk in place of the DF0: icon and shows also DF1: DF2: DF3: with question marks
- I double click the icon for the diskette and it opens a new window showing the contents (just the trash can)
- I eject the disk from the drive, but the disk icon does not update. The computer still thinks the disk is in the drive.

I also tried replacing the drive with a gotek, but still have to test better in order to make an accurate description

Could the problem be the drive ? The Amiga motherboard was recently recapped, and I don't know if I messed anything up.

Thanks,
Regards

It could be a problem with the drive, but first of all check to see that the drive cable is plugged in correctly at both ends. See if it sits neatly on both rows of pins.

yea, as above.. the floppy drive cable being the wrong-way around would be my first guess, as it causes the LED to stay on.

I connected it end to end without twisting it. Is that the correct way to connect it ?

Here's a picture of the inside of an A600, there is no twist in the cable so I think you have it correct.

But that does depend on which floppy drive you have .

It could also be U8 ( 8520 ) VIA .

Looking at the slot of the floppy drive, you will see a small switch that is sprung loaded. The switch pin drops into the hole on your 880K floppy disk telling your Amiga if the disk is write enabled or write protected.
These switches get dusty & sticky over time so a few drops of switch cleaner & lots of pressing usually frees up the spring contacts.
Do it with the rear of the floppy elevated to avoid cleaner getting into the rear of the drives mechanism.

Another sign of Switches needing cleaning is the floppy drive making random noises & flashing the drive LED when no disk is inserted.

Hi,
Swapped the disk drive with a gotek, and noticed I was putting the ribbon cable in the Amiga, one row of pins to the left leaving two pins out of the connection.
Once I corrected that, it works. Still don't know why I get up to four disk drive icons in workbench. I have a USB stick with some bootable adfs with games and they boot.
But on some of the ADFs, when I start workbench and then put the stick in the gotek, they don't open when I click the DF0: icon. Anyone has a clue ?
Thanks,
Regards
