Amiga 2000 Mods Path
Hey All,
I just acquired an Amiga 2000 2.x ROMS, 8mb in good condition with Video Toaster cards and should arrive soon. It will definitely have a battery removal, CR2032 cell replacement and recap. 3.2.2 ROM ordered. Since it's most likely OCS, I'm pondering several upgrade paths: Agnus/Denise- 1. Agnus ChipRam (1mb) or (2MB)?. Advantages of 2MB? 2. 8373RYPD Super Denise It is likely a 4.3 rev board but I'll confirm. I have been looking at the Super Denise and 8372A Agnus swap out mod on the "Tube". 3. Possibly-Kipper2K Buffee Gary Sander and Willowe Agnus. Seems these are not available for A2000 as of yet. Video- RGBtoHDMI CPLD with Pi Zero. Does this get around some of the Agnus limitations or (Just Upgrade Agnus/Denise anyway?). I apologize if its a silly question. Accelerator- TF536 50Mhz 64MB Ram and 8GB CF And, a few other goodies. Flaws in my plan? A better way to go? Regards, |

Depends on what you want to do with it.
A TF536 is certainly a nice accelerator, better than say a G-Force 030 or something you might get with a Toaster system. At something like $150-200 I can't see how you could justify going with that while you have the option of a PiStorm. If you just want to WHDLoad on it, playing classic amiga games on the ECS chipset then the TF536 is totally fine. But if you want RTG, high performance (relatively speaking for an A2000) you're going to want an RTG card eventually and PiStorm covers that too. There's certainly an argument for getting a TF536 and maybe a flickerfixer like an Indivision ECS, it just doesn't make all that much sense when you can do a lot better. |

TF536 is very cool, but for 2000 there are also N2630 and Dicke Olga to consider with much faster IDE and various other features.
2MB chip is nice so you never have to think about chip ram again. |

+1 for cpu slot turbos instead of m68k socket turbos. It's an A2000! Thankfully these days we have some new projects that utilize the cpu slot.

It just arrived! I was nervous about the "Varta" battery. I unpacked it and opened the cover. Took out the drive cage and prayed. Whoa!! Barely any corrosion (visible). Just a small bit on the end of the GP battery!
And, It's a Rev 6 with an 8372A Agnus! |

GP batteries are way less destructive compared to Varta. This my A2500 I purchased back in 2019 and after thorough cleanup (in the dishwasher) it's still running.

Go with the Dickie/Fat Olga. I just got my card. I was considering pistorm/vampire, but the vampire is too expensive IMO, and there is something I just don’t like about the pistorm.

Can you do a BusTest run (an AmiNet Tool) and post the memory bandwidth results in this thread? https://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=109013

In my rev. 6.2 Amiga 2000 I installed a PiStorm with an adapter in the CPU slot and an RGB2HDMI in the video slot. Everything works beautifully and I'm using a very nice Sony 17" svga CRT to display both my RTG Workbench and Amiga RGB video with the help of an HDMI switcher. Nowadays PiStorm offers CPU acceleration, RAM expansion, hard disk storage, RTG graphics, kickstart rom mapping and wifi all-in-one solution with a cost of less than €100
Can't go wrong with that setup! Last edited by btp; 23 July 2024 at 12:40. Reason: Typos |
