One more thing: is there a way to avoid the window asking for confirmation of conversion from PGN icon to ColorIcon via the ConvertTrueColor command?

Yeah, the NewIcons patch is responsible for the transparency and to make the icons borderless. WB 3.1 always displays icons with frames by default, it can not handle transparency masks. WB 3.5+ will use the new icon.library function DrawIconState(), which can display the icons frameless, but WB 3.1 is older and will never call this function.

You could try the following: comment out the NewIcons patch from your startup-sequence, but don't remove the newicons.library from Libs:. And then try to install Birdie or Birdie2000 with the options "NoIconBorder" and "FloodMaskMWB" instead of the NewIcons patch. Read the Birdie doc carefully. I'm not an expert for Birdie, never used it myself, but this could be another or even better approach to achieve transparency on WB 3.1.

Concerning the requester:
You can choose "Always" to suppress the requester until the next reboot. The requester only appears in case that you are trying to replace the original TrueColor icon by a palette based ColorIcon.
