How well would this run on a PPC Amiga anyway? Just how fast do those things get?

Well, an 060 is a bit under powered for fast action arcade titles of 85-95.
Basic 603 PPC is typically x3 faster, and should pull out some of them together with RTG. Faster chips will run some titles at acceptable performance. |

The Amidog versions of MAME run quite well on a Sonnet 400MHz/1M, frameskip of 2 usually so 30FPS or so, without sound skipping. Warp Emulation Suite (aka WES) WarpMame and WarpNeo Mame run well since 183 with args -blitppc -sr 22050 tested with D&D ToD, D&D SoM, Xmen Vs Street Fighter, AvP, etc http://caesar.logiqx.com/php/emulator.php?id=warpmame, requires speedhack executable or DisL2Flush=1 and -blitppc for good speed in later games. I built a very hacky version of Retroarch with MAME2003 for later games but I only ever really tested on Ragnarok, but that ran almost everything I threw at it quite well. Unless you're talking about CSPPC or BPPC, in which case not well at all. |

Thanks to pointing to WES, that is difficult to find these days, but nevertheless it was interesting. Most of the heavy games obviously are difficult, when too much on screen action. But some play actually very well, if they fit 320x256 screen and 256 colours.
Sadly the WarpMAME emulator has some bugs that cause memory dropouts and rerunning it a few times will run you out of memory and require a reboot. |

Be prepared for further inconsistencies when trying out more games. Specifically, anything that doesn't fit into 320x256 will always be shifted in AGA. With Bad Dudes, even under RTG, it looks like in the picture, and I have no idea why, even if it would fit in terms of resolution.

Out of a hundred tried roms I tell you, there ones that not only offset draw, but also skew, detect wrong resolution or even show garbage, it's just luck or hand picked settings that can remediate the problem, or a newer MAME, but that's out of our scope due to heavy cpu loads on later versions.

What I mean is that a game that ran in MAME version X.X may not run anymore in MAME version X.Y, even though it's a higher version. Unfortunately, that's been the case for a long time. For example, Shadow Dancer runs well under 0.37 but has graphical issues with 0.60. |

by editing the file: "$VER: MAME v0.37b14 (Sep 13 2002)" It would rather be a version for 68060 |

In the meantime, i have used a lot mame037b2 on a PiStorm32lite with RPI3a+ and it is not satisfactory apart from old arcade stuff like Arkanoid with low demands.
I don't know if on RPI3a+ without the Amiga (RaspianOS or whatever OS might run on it) Mame could run fine. |

In the makefile, you could choose between software or OpenGL rendering, which brought even more speed. As far as I can remember, it ran almost at full speed, even with newer games. |

Here is a simple script launcher for MAME.
After watching Daedalus tutorials on YouTube and blatantly adopting his code, though I did make some changes, this is what I have put together. In the zone, you will find the GUI that can be used with launch scripts for those who don’t want to deal with the command prompt. As mentioned, it's just a launcher, so it’s not comparable to a proper GUI. I will probably expand it further if time allows, but for now, it should be sufficient. My thanks go to Daedalus for his outstanding tutorials on Twitch and YouTube, which are definitely recommended for anyone interested in this kind of thing. All information on how to use it is in the README in the archive. Have fun! |
