Cheapest way to obtain a 3.2 ROM for A1200
I believe I need a 3.2 ROM for my A1200 in order for it for hard drives larger than 4GB to work properly.
I was looking at the Amiga Forever Premium Edition as it says it includes 3.X ROMs but does that definitely include 3.2 or is there a cheaper way for me to obtain it please? |

Doesn't PFSAIO allow larger than 4Gb HDDs?

You need the device driver and the filesystem to support large hard drives. PFS solves the filesystem side, but the devices driver (which is in ROM) still has a limit.
It's possible to create a setup with 3.1 or 3.0 ROMs that loads a replacement device driver from the hard drive, then reboots to activate it and boot from it. It needs careful configuration, but there are plenty of guides out there as the issue has been around for decades. So, if your only reason for looking to upgrade is large hard drive support, there are cheaper ways of doing it than buying 3.2. But 3.2 has a lot more in the way of improvement besides large drive support, so it's worth considering a purchase either way. |

Find a dealer close to you could be the cheapest option for the shipping expense... List of dealers here: https://www.hyperion-entertainment.c...to-buy/dealers

Many thanks for all the info and the time taken to explain. I’ve actually bought replacement 3.2 ROM chips instead which I didn’t know was a possibility before.

You just need file system software. No ROM update required

You should be aware that ROM 3.2 does not allow to boot your existing WB 3.1. You have to upgrade WB to 3.2, too.
ROM 3.X at first breaks your exising WB 3.1, too. But you only have to add one file (workbench.library) to make it boot again. That file is available on Cloanto's homepage: https://www.amigaforever.com/classic/download/ There is a large harddrive FAQ in the hardware section of this forum. Worth reading. |

Thanks for this extra info. Seems I’ve gone into this with my eyes wide shut!
I’ve installed the 3.2 ROM chips and nothing exploded. Hoorah! I have downloaded the workbench library and the icon library and have them on an adf to try and get my ClassicWB install to boot up. It seems to accept the icon library but not the workbench library. I’ve tried 2 different versions (one about 180kb and the other about 70kb) of the workbench library but it just keeps bringing up the prompt for it. Sorry but can anyone advise me further? |

The Install3.2 floppy disk contains both libraries in the needed versions.

Thought latest rom update, allows backwards compatability for using older workbench.library? |

Grab one of these:
https://www.amigakit.com/a1200-flash...l?currency=GBP Then insert any ROM you like into flash and boot it on the fly. You can also update the libraries to any that you require without having to make a new ROM either. Benefits of this, you never had to flash or purchase your ROMS again! |

I would say physical ROM chips are less needed because since 3.0 (well, technically since 1.4?) you can Kick using ROM images on the harddrive.
But this Quote:
ACA cards let you boot many Kickstarts, add custom ones, and install a CF card with PFS to support larger drives as well as install WB. So no disks needed either. (Note that for e.g. Kick 3.2, you must install WB 3.2.) |

PiStorm will also switch your kick to whatever you want, just drop it on your boot partition and refer to it in the config file.

RPi is a WIP CPU emu. It doesn't really give a benefit one way or another, and not really compared to softkicking either which is easier.
And you still have to "obtain" it. (Sorry, thread title hit my funny bone ) |
