Anyone with a 386 or 486 should give FastDoom a look, the speed increase you can get is remarkable.

My Amiga goldengate Bridgeboard went from 11-12fps in timedemo1 up to 16fps due to FastDoom’s optimisations.

Interesting video.

Major speed boosts were achieved by making floors and ceilings solid and reducing the resolution, as expected. Code optimized for specific 386/486 CPUs made hardly any difference, which makes sense because they share the same instruction set.

What this means is that in order to get an acceptable frame rate on slower machines the graphics has to be seriously compromised. IMO once you do that it's no longer really Doom. One of the good things about the Amiga port is that they didn't compromise the graphics to get speed, unlike some other ports.

I won't be trying out FastDoom because my only interest in running Doom on the PC is for historical accuracy. When I want to play the game I do it on my Amiga.
