Fate of Atlantis running slooooooooooow on 2MB ram
I just came upon a video of someone playing Indy 4 - Fate of Atlantis (adventure) on an Amiga. I actually wished for and got that game as a christmas present many years ago. But it turned out to be a huge disappointment. Gameplay was slow as f... and I eventually sold the game again, as it was unbearable to play. It literally took several minutes to walk from one side of the jungle in Tikal to the other. Watching the recent gameplay video that took no more than ten seconds, so something was very off. Every other part of the game was slow as well. Unbearably slow. I later played the game on pc and had a good time.
Although it never caused problems in other games, I suspect, that this sluggish behavior was caused by me having 2 MB of ram in my A500. I originally bought a 512k expansion (Alcotini Minimem) and was later gifted another expansion with 1MB (Zydec Megaboard) to sit between my original expansion and the computer - and thus having 2 MB of ram. (if I remember it also came with some kind of adapter for the Gary chip in order to work properly with the added ram). Could this be what caused the game to run slowly, like I am suspecting? Did anyone else notice strange behavior with more than 1 MB of ram installed? Last edited by sittingduck; 04 July 2024 at 12:00. |

There is a thread somewhere that lists games which activate more content if more memory is present, perhaps fate is one of them.

Game is sluggish due to slow 68000. Nothing to do with extra ram, i ran it with no problem on my A1200 with 2+16MB. You just need an accelerator board.

the game is slow on 68000, but you can play with patience in some place.
If you play with Sophia in some scenario, is very slow, but yet playable. If you playt alone with only puzzle to resolve is yet playable if you play alone with action & puzzle there is some problems. In some scenes is too slow for figthing the enemies. Recently is found that you can use "uppercut" to defeat enemies with only 1 shot. (tn0 keys from numeric keyboard) and you can play also this mode. True that extra rams not change the slowness of the game, but could be different type of memory and their speed could slow the game. i play this game with 512k chip ram and 512k slow fast, and 512k chip ram and 2 MB fast connected to a chip (not remember what custon chip was) |

Thanks for the input. I just recall some sections being unplayable to the point that I would be surprised if the game was released like that - hence why I thought my atypical config could be the issue.

Alcotini, now that's a name I haven't heard in a looong long time.
That's where I got my Amiga back in the day. |

amiga.resource.cx says the Zydec board needs Kick 1.3. If you had a standard 1.2 kickstart maybe memory addressing was a problem, slowing the system?

I played on this on a base A600 and distinctly remember the Algiers market being an absolute chore to walk across.
One of the few adventure games where disk swapping wasn't the slowest part! |

Not sure you can get faster ram on 68000, but real fast mem makes a difference with this game as it naturally uses it if found. The game is a port of the PC version probably. It's one of the biggest Lucas games to hit the amiga, which can explain why it's slow. |

I played it on a 2mb A600 with HD and I also recall that overhead market section that has you chasing/following the servant to Omar's place was a real test of perseverance. Drawing all those dots really dragged it down I guess .

the beauty of Amiga version is also to play with it with original speed if you using an emulator or good speed with real Amiga.
Algeri is very slow if you play with Sophia, but then the game is amost playable. i made 2 longplay: one from floppy disk (df0: and df1: only) with original speed and onother with HDD, but with original speed of 68000 Floppy version: [ Show youtube player ] hdd version: [ Show youtube player ] |
