Right, makes sense, some coders had it together like some German coders or Ocean France <3 Hmm so now I'm thinking X-Out/Z-Out as well maybe?

Considering the action scenario (not pause menu stuff which might as well be space on the keyboard) two types of games are common: (this is also reflected in the history of arcades, where the same happened and perhaps to even a greater extent - you had to physically drill a hole and add and connect a button and the PCB must be remade to add the input, or buy/rent/lease the original cab which became an increasingly scarcer option as the games numbered hundreds rather than dozens)

1. Shooters with missile/smartbomb or select upgrade (you know their names).
2. Platformers with jump AND shoot (you know these too, and Turrican is one of those on Amiga).

In this sense, "Arcade PCBs went from 1 to 2 buttons" around 1985-1987. They were "afraid" (or not brave) too.

Fighters would take a few year later on arcade and racers used wheels. (And quite a few others used special controllers, especially Atari Games was the innovator here.) Early ones are ofc thrusters like Asteroids and Defender, but they are kind of the exception. Anything special required as I say buying/renting/leasing dedicated cabs and that was an option for a minority of all the arcades out there.

On Amiga it's a couple lines of code, since 1985.

R-Type 1 (1989) has 2 button support. You can dock/undock the satellite with it.

Ocean did great conversions, but Toki from Ocean has only one button and is a nightmare to play like that!
