A4000 friendly SFX PSU?

Considering the PSU in my A4000 is 30 years old it won't live forever. Maybe I can get it recapped but it's easier to just replace it.

I got myself a Corsair SFX but the problem with that is that the fan isn't spinning. The load never gets high enough to make it go. So, wonder if anyone knows of one that has the fan spinning constantly?

And the fan needs to suck to pull air through the case or else everything else gets toasty.

Any room for another 80mm fan behind the Drive bays & in front of the PSU?

Exactly. Won't be much circulation without one.

If I take out the CD/DVD drive it might, with it in that's not gonna happen.

I might be able to make some holes in the 3D-printed SFX-stand and put two 40mm or even 50mm fans. I guess that's a viable solution that haven't thought of until now. Might be a bit noisy solution though.

What I did and some of the other guys with Corsair SF-450s do is just open the power supply up and unplug the fan and plug it into a 3-pin fan to drive connector.
Or since you've got to convert it to ATX anyway power it off of the ATX connector.
Or if you're putting it in an A4000 PSU housing, mount a different fan on the A4000 PSU housing.

I have found a picture of the fan inside the SF450.



It has 4 wires.

Not really to keen on opening up the PSU and meddle around but I guess it's doable.

I suppose something like this would do the trick?

Winner winner, chicken dinner!

Basically, pull the PSU's Fan of the internal board & hard wire it into the PSU's external Power rails.

Now the fan is on all of the time & Hax0rd safely!

Hopefully, the PSU will still fire up without the fan header present on it's internal board.

I have one of these and I've measured that there's room for 2 50mm fans.



It's probably noisier but might actually be a better solution to get good airflow?

i cant even see any corsair SF models below 750W atm that arent sold out, got my old mini-itx mobo in a cheapo sff case and no way am i stuffing my old psu in there, theres just bugger all room for cables and the airflow would suck so been looking at the sfx psu's.

Everyone seems to prefer those lower wattage corsair models but im only really seeing the 750/1000W models for sale which is overkill for my old pc/mobo setup.

I got my SF450 4 years ago. But yes, I've checked as well since I'd like another one for a NAS I'm planning to build and they seem to be unobtanium, if they're even made anymore.

About that SF450 PSU, i have to warn you about one thing though.
When i used it before on my main rig, the Commodore A2386 couldn't work anymore, while it worked and still works perfect with a regular A4000 PSU.
It seems some ATX/ITX PSU work with the bridgeboards and some don't.
Others have discussed a similar problem on EAB, and have ended by installing another PSU.

People have been speaking good of BeQuiet SFX but i can't confirm it would work with bridgeboards. For now, i still rely on my A4000 Liteon recapped PSU and a spare.

I have no bridgeboard so this is not an issue for me. Considering to get a Mediator instead.

yeah i cant find a lower wattage one so just dropped £160 on a 750w model, its seriously overkill for what i need, but even the 750 seems low'ish in stock in some places so i just bit the bullet and got 1.
