Help with WHDLoad - Highway Hawks

Hey there community,

I am Chris, a real collector of Amiga Games. I have about 2.500 here and installed them all on whdload what causes some nice bugs that followed on whd-report page.

One bug seems to be really tricky cause the programer gave up. It's the game "Highway Hawks".

The programer told may that I simply have to accept that it won't work.

My system is a A4000 - 040. The funny fact, the game was a little instable at first, then the programmer changed the code and now I have much more problems then before.

My hope now is you, may someone can take a look on it.

The bugnumber is: 0004440

Have many thanks for reading this and may helpin' me.

Best regards,
Chris

Thanks for testing these games and reporting all the bugs! I won't be fixing it but I appreciate your efforts.

In mantis it looks like lots of competent people have already looked at it over time.. Probably need to chalk this one up as too many games and too few developers.

problem is: it's impossible to reproduce OP issue with only WinUAE. It's probably a very sneaky timing problem that only happens on Christoph 040 board...

Same issue when people report bugs on MBX1230 or PiStorm. If I can't reproduce it on WinUAE or on my 060 or find anything with SNOOPxxx options I'm stuck.

The title happens to be one of my 'pet' test subjects wrt amiberry, because 1. the whdload version does exactly what the OP describes in amiberry/whd-booter emulation, and 2. the .adf version of this title does exactly the same sort of thing in amiberry using the builtin default Quickstart profile (A500/ECS/512chip&512ram/KS-1.3 rom).

In fact, the -only- way I can get this to run in amiberry, is using a machine profile of A500/OCS/512chip & KS-1.2 rom (and no other drives) ...then it works quite well in emulation. If you have expansion ram it goes to pot as well even with this (working) profile.

Just thought I'd make these observations in case such might be useful =)

Oh oh that doesn't sound very good. So I guess it will never be fixed.

I notice on the mantis ticket #0004440 that jotd provided another slave, which by the looks of it nobody bothered to try....

....I just did that (amiberry + CWB & P96) and although there's no title splash screen, and the loading animation doesn't play (might be an RTG thing), the game does run without graphical hiccups with that revised slave.

I would suggest you try jotd's revised slave =)

Well spotted, somehow this went under my radar.
I have added this v1.2 slave to WHDLoad beta set.

If problem is solved can someone comment here or on mantis? I'll release it officially.

If someone would like to bundle the revised slave into a whdload.lha pack, I can retest how this goes using the amiberry/whd-booter process ~ if it works as expected, I can maybe get Horace to add a snippet into the XML file, to cater for it...

..however, this should really be tested on real Amiga hw as well...to be sure =)

I tried version 1.2 an its much more worse then 1.1 on my A4000. As soon as the first engineer car shows the game crashs. That was not so bad with version 1.1

I did a log file and a core dump but can't it upload here

I won't give up to get it work on my A4000 but I need your help for that.

EDIT: Uploaded the log-files in the bug on matis bug tracker.

@jotd

Retested HighwayHawks_v1.2_BETA.lha as provided by @Retroplay here-above.

Using amiberry (preview branch) on x86-64 with current whdbooter setup (whdload v18.9.6601), fudged an XML snippet based on previous HighwayHawks_v1.2_2538 ...

-title starts and loads, game title splash-screen displayed correctly
-loading animation starts & runs (there is a very small graphics anomaly, but I also see this wrt .adf versions of the game ; likely an emulator thang =)
-game itself starts and runs ...no longer any graphical glitches as noted previously. Limited amount of game-play time, but certainly enough to prove the problems seem to be fixed in my testing.

Ergo, wrt amiberry usage and the builtin whdbooter process, the revised slave is 'a good thing', and I'd be all for you pushing a release officially. Now that it tests good, I'll hoist a ticket on Horace's github, pointing back to this thread, so he has some background on the matter =)

@Retroplay ~ just curious, does the revised slave work for you?

TIA

PS: @Chris4981 ...not intending to hijack your thread of course =) Surely I tell you, if I had the same Amiga hardware here as you have, I could be of more help..sadly, that is not the case :^/
