Impressive 13kB Quake demake

[ Show youtube player ]
That sort of detail level and asset size would be ideal for a more playable Amiga "port" ;-)

And ye, it can be played in a browser:
https://js13kgames.com/games/q1k3/index.html

While the video is new the game is not, theres a "making of" page from 2021 here:
https://phoboslab.org/log/2021/09/q1k3-making-of

It is impressive, but it does use WebGL so no software rendering routines in there like the original Quake

I think software rendering code would probably take more than 13 KB on it's own.

"One of the more popular first person shooters to launch in the... eh.. 80s"

At least look it up before uploading a video about it.

13kB but libraries are like half gig or more... this is common nowadays - code is few kB but required environment is gigabyte or more...

For a FPS that really only uses 96k I'd still recommend to check out .kkrieger by .theprodukkt from 2004: https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=12036

Two gigabytes, you say?

For size optimized compos you obviously always need to take the platform into account. 13K JS is not like 3.25x Amiga 4K (and nobody will complain about you using e.g. graphics.library for the latter). .kkrieger is allowed to use 3d HW and windows, but that doesn't make it less impressive. Using JS and webgl doesn't detract from the achievement.

But it's fine for the 4GB and under entry, right?

Hmm. While your browser seems to support WebGL, it is disabled or unavailable. If possible, please ensure that you are running the latest drivers for your video card.
Not impressive. The original Quake only needed a Pentium 75, 8MB RAM and a standard VGA card. This '13kB Quake' is a fraud.

Should be able to run on an unexpanded 256k A1000.

They could switch to text mode for enemies. With a copper background.

If not, add DSPs as needed until it runs.

I think a noteworthy detail has not been mentioned yet; It's 13kb when gzipped. The competition puts a limitation on the download size, not on the code size

I remember very similar german demo project, back in 2005.
It's called kkriger, and it was a 3D demo shooter in only 96KB

I remember starting it back then on Pentium 3, on local TV I worked... it took like 5 minutes until it unpack into memory.
Still.. very very impressive... and it's really amazing procedural engine.. and it looks very good.

Here is how it looks
