You'd have to ask them. But from what I remember the answer was sound quality. It could be improved with native re-players, not as much with emulated re-players. You cold still choose between native and emulated re-players for all formats. Native re-players had effects such as sample interpolation and other post processing DSP functions.

I see. Could be fun to try. Deliplayer.com is very broken, and have no download links.

Do you know where to download Deliplayer?

I stumbled across something similar in the "Rob Hubbard" player code (or "driver" as they seem to have called it in C64 times) for "Skate Or Die" when I wanted to convert it to something less "custom" (see here).

Using MemPeeker with the audio code running you could see that one waveform was changed in each call to the player, but that started only once the instrument (or sample) was used for the first time, which happened about 3 or 4 minutes into the song IIRC.

The "Rob Hubbard" player also looked very similar to the David Whittaker code, but was a bit simpler. Probably an early version of the Whittaker code? Would be interesting to compare the "Skate Or Die" or "Sanxion" code to one of the first Whittaker productions on the Amiga like "Army Moves" or "Bubble Bobble".
