EON Demo
Hi Whdload team,
One of the best OCS/ECS demo ever made needs a WHDLOAD install It seems that only ADF version can be downloaded. http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=81094 https://files.scene.org/get:nl-ftp/p...ty_version.zip |

Bump
Almost 2 years later, I think we can say that HD install will never come out. If WHDLOAD team wants to make an installer it would be great Thanks. |

Kinda frustrated I cannot run it on my A1200 (ADF version on the HxC shows tons of gfx corruptions ;-) |

Rawdic images of the adf's matched to a generic slave might work.

There are a lot of A500 demos that have problems running on A1200. This is one of them. Either they do not run at all or there are bugs like gfx, audio corruption. The demos scene coders do a lot of hardware tricks. This demo will never run perfect on A1200. Not matter what you can do with whd-installs to load different ROMs etc. This is why you must always have at least 2 Amigas 1 A500 and 1 AGA, Amiga |

There is a modified Kick 1.3 slave by Agressor/Wepl that might load the demo adf's (relabeled Disk.1, Disk.2) into a 512k+512k A500 environment. The install it came with doesn't work for me and only had Disk.1 as a single Data/file but someone might know if it would work with EON/TBL?

I think one of the mighty WHDload install makers here should be able to do a proper install... it has been a long time now coming

besides eliminating the need for disk swap, now this whdload version also works with AROS kickstart replacement... very cool ! making it possible to show the demo emulated in a web player like vAmigaWeb directly on the whdload page.
When running the original disk based version side by side with the whdload version some differences become visible though... one is quite at the beginning of the demo, the other at the end... for me it seems as if the HDified disk loading of the current EON whdload version has some synchronization problems. Could it be that the simulated disk loading by whdload is a bit too slow? After the dog barking scene it skips quite a bunch of frames seen in the orig disk based version. Then it plays fine again .... Also at the very end there is some frame skipping going on. for side by side comparing I put the two versions on the about page of vAmigaWeb ... (the first and the last entry) ... open two browser windows and start them in parallel https://vamigaweb.github.io/doc/about.html maybe @paraj has some idea what is going on? as he not only did this awesome whdload version of EON, but also the hard disk drive support in vAmiga itself was developed by him. |

Yeah, so whdload version of EON I don't think is fully in sync with disk based version running on A500. The demo uses a pretty sophisticated system (read more on http://tbl.nu/) where it loads and prepares the next part while the current one is running. It had a major, bug simple bug that prevented it from running on most expanded systems (can't remember the details ATM). Easily fixed, but I also found that at least on my 060 it would also fail catastrophically in one part (IIRC the tree in the woods part) because it loaded too fast, and corrupted code that was currently running. It could probably have been fixed differently (better), but what I ended up doing was loading next part to a "safe buffer" and copying it back to the expected position just before the part starts. This unfortunately gives a small delay before a part starts, which is probably what you're seeing. It is also present on "hard" Amigas.
Additionally when whdload needs to load from virtualized floppy disks it will also switch back to OS to load unless PRELOAD is enabled (which it is by default). This will cause very visible delays with a black screen, so I don't think that's what's happening here. I can see you've enabled 8MB of fast RAM for the configuration, so that should be plenty. I think that's just going to be the way it is, but you can try to 1) copy disk images and slave to RAM disk and run from there 2) increase CPU speed. 1 will rule out HD/OS speed issues, 2 might help to reduce delay a bit. |
