Anyone remembers that huge website with a ton of Amiga utility disks?
TLDR: Not Aminet
Back some 10 years ago there was a website of which I unfortunately lost the URL of, so now desperately trying to remember. Essentially you would see a content of the compilation disk ie util-diskx043.adf contains such and such programs. There was an option to go into the raw .html directory on that website which you would then browse until you find ie util-diskx043.adf. I specifically remember the website allowed you to browse it in raw format the same way amigascene.org allows you to. And that place was huge. Like insanely huge, especially if you would go one folder up and realise there are other folders which also contain compilation disks but from other groups from the scene (I don't know the status of these Amiga groups, i.e. legal or pirates). I remember some of the folders had the names of the groups that compiled them. Going up the top parent folder I think there were two main folders, never had time to inspect the other and how deep it went, as the later was deep enough. Looked kinda like this: http://ftp.amigascne.org/pub/amiga/ But it definitely had a frontend with graphics, you would go into browsing mode when you would look for a specific disk. Trying to remember.... on the right side of the web page there was white text, black background with the listing of the compilation disk... on the left would be the link, plus option to browse the web directory IIRC... (testing the limits of my own memory). Disclaimer: I don't know if these compilation disks were legal releases or not, but the dates showed they were definitely made in the late 80's as I did put a couple of these compilations on actual floppies and into my Amiga (floppies which I in the meantime I deleted). |

Hey Steven,
Could it have been back2roots.org? https://web.archive.org/web/20030409...ack2roots.org/ |

Yess! That is the one! Thank you!
As a matter of fact I remember this folder: https://web.archive.org/web/20090911...sks/17bit/dms/ I remember downloading one of the sub-root folders with wget, but a few yrs later the HD got damaged and hence how I lost all connections to that site. You can also find a mirror on the file server: https://ftp2.grandis.nu/turran/FTP/C...TTR/17bit/dms/

I'm glad you find it, but just in case someone else is interested in a "huge website with a ton of Amiga utility disks", The Old Computer is exactly that, and it's still live.
