Especially since the hardware could use a refresh soon.

I tried it. Setup a linux machine in Azure with 8TB disk. Seemed like it would work just fine as everything worked and I managed to score a static IP etc.

It would not cost that much either. $10 to $20 a month.

Then I started reading about data transfer costs... hm
At the bottom of this chart, we can read about it
Check the "Internet Egress (Routed via Routing preference transit ISP network)".
https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pr...ils/bandwidth/

Then I had another look at how much data is actually transferred.
Last month alone, the anonymous FTP account downloaded 16481 GiB.
So lets withdraw 100GB from that since that is free each month.
16381 GiB to pay for at $0.08 per GiB.

16381 * 0.08 = $1310 PER MONTH.

(Sure, price goes down to $0.065 between 10 TiB and 40 TiB so a bit less, but for simplicity sake we'll use 0.08)

And that's for the anonymous account only. We can add another TiB of traffic for the registered accounts.

So unless I misunderstood something, no, Turran FTP will not move to Azure. Shame as that would have been a lot easier for me.

Can you read about this somewhere when setting things up? No, not really. There is a nice calculator where you can see exactly what the hardware you have going is costing but that does not take outgoing traffic into account.
Incoming traffic is free though.. that's something.

Oh yeah, and traffic is steadily going up. We are at 18945 GiB downloaded for the anonymous account so far in July. Up nearly 3 TiB from last month.

Why not get a butget server at OVH. They don't have bandwidth caps, you don't need a fast cpu or lots of memory, just disk space. For 31 usd a month you can get a 6TB/32gb/100mbit unmetered server.

Which option gives you that? I can't see that combination and fail to find any with 6TB storage. Then again, I've never used OVH so I might be blind.

yes its a bit hidden

https://www.ovhcloud.com/en/

click on "bare metal cloud" -> "eco dedicated servers"

scroll down a bit

CPU : Intel Xeon E3-1245v2 - 4c/8t - 3.4 GHz/3.8 GHz
Memory : 32 GB DDR3
Storage : 3 x 2 TB HDD SATA Soft RAID
Public bandwidth : 100 Mbps
$22.99 /month

you will have to run the disks in raid 0 (make sure you have a backup system in place, like rsync to your local server every hour or so)

OVH is a hosting provider that does not hold your hand. You get the hardware + bandwidth and support is pretty much only on the hardware itself.

That you are getting here is pretty much a bottom of the barrel server. Its old hardware, slow disks. But it should be more than enough for running an FTP server.

I've been working with OVH for years so if you need help setting up the server let me know.

Thanks. I'll have a think about it. Bit sad to go from 10GiB to 100MiB but yeah.. should not matter much.

Well, so much for Jottacloud. Guess they don't like Amiga games. And no, I really do not store anything other "illegal" stuff there as I try to stay under 5TB storage.

Backup now says
2022/09/15 16:09:18 Failed to create file system for "jottacloud:/FTP": read metadata failed: error 423: no.jotta.backup.errors.FSQuotaException: Account is locked due to breach of terms and conditions (Account is locked.)

Hi Turranius
Our Account Review Team has completed an account inspection of your Jottacloud account. Based on this inspection, it is our conclusion that you are sharing illegal, malicious, pirated and/or copyrighted content that we consider a serious violation of our Terms of Use, paragraphs 6 and 15.
You must start downloading your stored data as soon as possible, as your Jottacloud account will be terminated in 30 days.
All shared files and folders in your account have been disabled, so it is no longer possible for other people to download the content.
Your Jottacloud account is also write-locked, and you will not be able to upload more data to your account.
You can still download data for a limited time-period. In 30 days your account will be terminated and the data stored there will be permanently deleted.
What is an account review?
During the account inspection, we have investigated whether your account has been set up correctly and that you are not in violation of our terms of use in any way. Read more here.
We have not looked at your content. Our Account Review Team uses tools that allow them to see the information you have registered about your user (name, email, phone number, etc.), and they can also look at metadata related to your data (file / folder name, upload date, size etc.).

Regards,
Jottacloud Account Review Team

New host for FTP and WEB: ftp.grandis.nu

Due to the power cost these days, I can not continue running the TURRAN FTP from its current location. I've decided, after a tip from jcgeuze, to move it offsite. I've spent the last few weeks, on and off, to migrate everything over there.
I'll instead send backups back "home" to grandis.nu and it will be ready to go back live if something happens at ftp.grandis.nu.

So please change your URLs from grandis.nu to ftp.grandis.nu. Let me know of any problems.

Oh, the new place only have 100Mb, so I've lowered the download rate of the anonymous "ftp" account to 500Kb/Sec. Otherwise it should all be the same.
This will both take care of my power and hardware costs as well as function as a offsite backup again, since we lost Jottacloud for that function.

"But if you are still sending it back "home", whats the difference if you have to have servers running there still anyway?"
I'm using VMWare vSphere with 2-3 cluster nodes 24/7. The other machines running on it have been relocated as well so I can shut down the TURRAN ftp virtual machine and only send backups to a separate file server. This allows me to shut down the vSphere, saving a lot of power.
While I appreciate the donations (see welcome message on the FTP), it is no where near what it costs in power to host the FTP.
The new solution costs about $30 a month, plus an additional setup fee, so that should be more manageable.
